AC Month Spotlight On: Folding & Papercraft!

`lazybutt:iconlazybutt: reports, January 20

What is this?

This is the seventh installment of articles, written for Artisan Crafts Month, which introduce the Artisan Crafts sub-galleries by talking about what they are, how to do work within them, and featuring artwork from the galleries. In this edition I will be talking about the Folding & Papercraft Gallery!

What is Folding & Papercraft?

Defintion from deviantART Gallery Description:

The art of folding and cutting paper to create objects of a 3D nature such as origami, dioramas, and other art work.

If you have a piece of craft work that has either been folded, cut, torn, bent or otherwise used paper, then it probably belongs here. Origami is among one of the more popular styles of art that is submitted to this category.

Origami is the traditional Japanese art or technique of folding paper into a variety of decorative or representational forms, as of animals or flowers. (Dictionary.com)

General Resources:

Here are some websites that you might find helpful:

Show me some examples!

Thumb:

Why is this a good Folding & Papercraft piece?
This artist took the Folding & Papercraft community by storm when they started to submit their pieces into the gallery, and it's not hard to see why! The talent, the patience, the photographic execution: it all adds up to some of the best Origami on dA.

Why is this a good Folding & Papercraft piece?
A thought that is executed greatly, as well as presented in a fashion that sets the mood for the piece.

There are many more great examples, which you can see for yourself here!

Do you have any Resources?

Here is a dA tutorial I've found that might help you Papercrafters out there!

-Origami Star Tutorial-, by ~Jingmamalulu
I feel in love with this tutorial the moment I found it for several reasons: 1) It is composed in a way that is easy to follow as well as easy to look at, 2) it is easy to understand, and 3) It can help anyone get into Origami!

I found a miscat! What do I do?

That's easy! Whenever you think you have found a miscategorization, there is one crucial thing that you need to do. Go to the deviation page, and in the Artist's Description box you will see a link titled, "Report Policy Violation" (It is located under the Picture information / Thumb code box). Go here, and click "Miscategorization" in the drop-down menu located next to the 'Type of Violation' section. In the 'Comment' section you will want to take the time to tell the Artisan Crafts Gallery Director (^Myana) why it does not belong, and why it should be moved. Let her know a possible new home (category) for it, and any information that might be helpful to her in the process of dealing with the Miscat.

You can see how this could be done here:

Some things that don't belong in Folding & Papercraft:

  • Cards made on the computer. [Belong in Digital Art]

  • Cards that have been drawn. [Belong in Traditional]

  • Tutorials and guides on how to fold a certain thing belong in Resources > Tutorials > AC

  • Deviations that have been painted upon belong in Trad Art

I know all I need to know now!

That is it for this edition. Stay tuned for the next edition where I explore Sculpture & Glass!

Awesome article. I used to do a lot of that origami star back in high school, as well as other simple origami just for fun. I love using paper as a means to be creative, but sadly, I haven't done anything as of late. The last one I did was this.

Thanks for putting this up! :)

Origami used to be one of my favourite hobbies, as well as quilling and papercutting.

Having recieved two origami kits over Christmas, I need new inspiration, and found it here.

Thankyou for posting these little sub-category Artisan Craft "awareness" articles. It really stimulates creativity. :)
