Abstraction in the Nude

*groundlingchild:icongroundlingchild: reports, January 21
Often when I or someone in my studio is doing an interesting series it makes me wonder who else in the artistic community is doing the same sort of thing. Having completed my first solidly abstract series, I was curious to see other abstract nudes on dA. The following are some of the best, most creative or original or just beautifully executed nude abstracts I could find.

In no particular order:

Body Projection 03 by ~timsumma shows a front view of a full female body but without looking hard at the full view of the image it's hard to tell. This sort of abstraction is rather impressive, especially if you read his method of projection (in the artist's comment)

Magma .2 by ~kMoOg is a little less abstract than some of the others, but the obscurity does beg a second look.

Organic Abstract by *saturninus employs clever lighting and good use of negative space to confuse the human elements.

Contorted by ~Jezebells-Angel again shows almost an entire human form while maintaining true abstraction. I had to stare at this piece for a long while before it made sense to me in a conventional light. The shadows in the center of the frame mimic the contours of the face, throwing off even the most determined eye.

Switchback by *wynnesome is identifiable as an upper torso, but due to the nipple piercing and strange resulting shadows it becomes foreign. With heavily textured skin the subject seems even stranger.

Form by *bthphoto shows the human form in one clean line. This simplicity is, to me, at the heart of abstraction.

Babyscape by =UniqueNudes is one of the least attractive pregnancy nudes I've ever seen. This stems naturally from his distaste for birthing and children. This piece and series portrays his "morbid curiousity" for the pregnant body by showing it as a harsh alien landscape.

This has been Abstraction in the Nude. Some of these deviants are 100% nude photographers and some specialize in other forms of photography. They're all worth a look though!

Thank you for including my piece here - it's a good article/feature.

Everyone always asks about "Switchback" - "Where is her other breast??!" She does have two, and which contour it is, is part of the eye-trickery of this image!

Of course it's not in his dA gallery, but here also is one of my favorites of Gremlin's abstracts - you can again, if you choose to zero in on features, identify the figure as a female body - or you can just look at the positive/negative space and see a smooth curve that delineates a purely abstract shape. If Gremlin's dA page was still up I definitely would have featured him--the abstract quality of his work was something I really admired.

Oh, I know you would not have left him out. Almost everything I do is inspired by the direction he was moving in developing his own style of abstracts. That particular piece I linked to... I just stare at that one. There's almost nothing there, and yet it's so gorgeous. I think so, anyway. That was one of his more recent works, from around last May I think. I think he might have only done 3 more shoots after that - two studio shoots with me, and the Red Rock shoot.
