The word art is derived from the Latin "ars", which, although literally defined means, "skill method" or "technique", holds a connotation of beauty.

During the Middle Ages the word ‘artist’ already existed, but the meaning was something resembling craftsman, while the word artesan was still unknown. An artist was someone able to do a work better than others, so the skilled excellency was underlined, rather than the activity field. In this period some "artisanal" products (such as textiles) were much more precious and expensive than paintings or sculptures.

Applied arts refers to the application of design and aesthetics to objects of function and everyday use. Whereas fine arts serve as intellectual stimulation to the viewer or academic sensibilities, the applied arts incorporate design and creative ideals to objects of utility, such as a cup, magazine or decorative park bench.
The fields of industrial design, graphic design, fashion design, interior design, decorative art and functional art are considered applied arts. In a creative and/or abstract context, the fields of architecture and photography are considered applied arts.
Decorative arts are traditionally defined as ornamental and functional works in ceramic, wood, glass, metal, or textile. The field includes ceramics, furniture, furnishings, interior design, and architecture. They are often categorized in opposition to the "fine arts", namely, painting, drawing, photography, and large-scale sculpture. Some distinguish between decorative and fine art based on functionality, intended purpose, importance, status as a unique creation, or single-artist production.

Sculpture is three-dimensional artwork created by shaping hard or plastic material; stone, metal, wood, glass, paper. Some sculptures are created directly by carving; others are assembled, built up and fired, welded, molded, or cast. The first known sculptures are from the Indus Valley civilization (3000 BCE), found in sites now known as modern-day Pakistan.
