`GeneratingHype on letters, editing and GDship

^lovetodeviate:iconlovetodeviate: reports, August 30
An interview with ex-GD, writer, editor, fascinating person: `GeneratingHype. Here are some tidbits from the interview (which I recommend reading in full):

"Letters presuppose a sort of authenticity, and I truly believe that a story—no matter the form—needs to be authentic and believable.

"Sometimes I wish I had stories such as "I wrote my first published poem at three and a half!" or "I started writing stories at two!", but writing never came easy for me and is still not very easy for me.

The Use of Adverbs in Fiction Writing

=DarcKnyt:iconDarcKnyt: reports, August 29
Adverbs are the endangered species of the adult fiction world. They're frowned on like putting a Baby Ruth bar in a punch bowl at a wedding reception -- not a good idea. They're also indicative of weak writing ... but why? This article covers why adverbs are evil and what you can do to avoid using them.

Talented writers required: RT5

~ReadThisMagazine:iconReadThisMagazine: reports, January 23
Read This Issue V - submissions required!
The team at Read This have just finished putting together RT4, the February issue, and now we're on the lookout for yet more great writing to put into RT5. For the first time, we're broadening our horizons to encompass drama, journal entries and basically anything you're willing to chuck at us.
If you're a writer and you want to get a foot on the magazine publishing ladder, or if you just want another credit to add to your CV, get writing. Read This aims to help "unknown" writers to gain more acclaim and attention - we're a friendly bunch; we read and consider EVERYTHING we get, and we'll happily offer crit to anyone we don't accept, so they can edit and improve.
We'll consider writing of any genre, in any style, by anyone - no matter what your age or nationality... we want to hear from you!
Send your writing to submissions@readthismagazine.co.uk, and get more info (plus examples of the stuff we like) at our website, here: [link]
You can also check out a whole load of recently-featured stuff in our dA gallery!

Read This III and IV, plus the 'New Start' contest - the latest

Read This III is now available, after a slightly longer-than-usual wait, because of the Christmas break. It's packed with good stuff as always, including poetry from dA "unknowns" ~non-the-road and :iamascientist: . If you're in the Edinburgh area, grab a copy from Word Power Books, The Forest, the University of Edinburgh George Square Library or the Blind Poet. If you're not lucky enough to live in our fair city, you can email us at submissions@readthismagazine.co.uk to get your hands on a copy.

We do owe you guys an explanation regarding our New Star Contest. It was technically a huge success - we received dozens of entries, many of a high standard. However, very few actually stuck to the theme we set!! We felt it would be unfair on those who'd stuck to the rules if we considered any of the invalid entries, and so we felt the only fair thing to do was to disband the contest for the time being. HOWEVER, many of the entries were still accepted and featured on the Read This website - check them out here [link]
FURTHERMORE, we hope to re-group and create a brand new contest sometime soon - watch this space.

In the meantime, RT4 is almost complete, and if you've sent anything to us in recent weeks, you'll hear from us soon. You can look forward to seeing RT4 in mid-February. Until then, keep writing!
