AC Month Spotlight On: Sculpture & Glass!

`lazybutt:iconlazybutt: reports, January 24, 2008

What is this?

This is the eighth installment of articles, written for Artisan Crafts Month, which introduce the Artisan Crafts sub-galleries by talking about what they are, how to do work within them, and featuring artwork from the galleries. In this edition I will be talking about the Sculpture & Glass Gallery!

General Resources

Here are some links to general resource websites that you might find helpful.

  • Axner Pottery Supply - "Largest selection of pottery supplies, ceramic supplies, materials, ceramic equipment, glazes, pottery tools and books"

Find more at *ArtisanCrafts!

What is Sculpture & Glass?

Defintion from deviantART Gallery Description:

Works using mediums such as clay, ceramic, synthetic sculpting compounds, glass, paper-mache, sand, and other medium.

Artwork that is sculptured and is functional, or artwork that contains glass would be suitable for submission here. The sub-galleries of Sculpture and Glass are Lights & Kaleidoscopes, Ornaments, Pots & Vases, Stained Glass, and Tableware. Keep these in mind when submitting your pieces as they may fall under one of them. (More on these categories later.)

Show me some examples!

Thumb:

Why is this a good Sculpture & Glass piece?
Showing functionality and craftsmanship is what it's all about in the Sculpture & Glass gallery, and this piece certainly represents that!

Artist: :iconminercia: ~minercia
Thumb:
Why is this a good Sculpture & Glass piece?
I believe that this piece represents the Ornaments & Paperweights sub-gallery due to the fact that it is elaborately presented, as well as being well designed.

Thumb:

Why is this a good Sculpture & Glass piece?
Showing off simple photographic skill to enhance the way your piece is presented is what this artist did here by letting the light and camera show the detail of the piece.

There are many more great examples, which you can see for yourself here!

What are the Sub-Galleries of Sculpture & Glass?

Here are the Sub-Galleries within Sculpture & Glass in a little more detail.

  • Lights & Kaleidoscopes -

    dA Gallery Description:
Lights, kaleidoscopes, and other kinds of sculpture that makes use of active light such as a candle or lightbulb.

If your piece falls under this gallery, it should be functional for the use of its light. These kinds of sculptures can include lamps, Kaleidoscopes, etc.

  • Ornaments & Paperweights -

    dA Gallery Description:
Ornaments, baubles, and miscellaneous curio regardless of the medium (glass, gemstone, etc.).

Submit to this gallery is your piece is an ornament of any kind. Please keep in mind that if your piece is a Jewelry piece it belongs in this gallery: Artisan Crafts > Jewelry.

  • Pots & Vases -

    dA Gallery Description:
Pots, vases, or other kinds of vessels regardless of medium (pottery, glass, etc.).

Submit here if your piece is a Pot or a Vase that provides a function such as carrying water, or other liquids. If your piece is a Sculpture that does not provide a function, such as the one listed above, then it belongs in the Traditional Sculpture gallery - Traditional > Sculpture.

  • Stained Glass -

    dA Gallery Description:
Glassworks that are stained or colored.

A simple gallery for pieces of artwork that are glass which have been stained or colored.

  • Tableware -

    dA Gallery Description:
Tableware (dishes, glasses, silverware, etc.) regardless of medium (ceramics, clay, glass, etc.).

If your piece can be used to transport food, or used in the process of eating food, then it belongs in Tableware. Some examples of what belongs here are Bowls, Plates, Glasses, Silverware, Utencils, etc. If your artwork is a Sculpture then it belongs in the Traditional Sculpture gallery - Traditional > Sculpture.

I found a miscat! What do I do?

That's easy! Whenever you think you have found a miscategorization, there is one crucial thing that you need to do. Go to the deviation page, and in the Artist's Description box you will see a link titled, "Report Policy Violation" (It is located under the Picture information / Thumb code box). Go here, and click "Miscategorization" in the drop-down menu located next to the 'Type of Violation' section. In the 'Comment' section you will want to take the time to tell the Artisan Crafts Gallery Director (^Myana) why it does not belong, and why it should be moved. Let her know a possible new home (category) for it, and any information that might be helpful to her in the process of dealing with the Miscat.

You can see how this could be done here:

It was once told in Symmyrnea... That whoever would talk to pine barks in the forest, write the mystery on the sea with ancient woods and take those faces to the isolated rocks on an island, would find the road to OEGGEM. And...(the end is the beginning)
