What is this?
This is the ninth installment of articles, written for
Artisan Crafts Month, which introduce the Artisan Crafts sub-galleries by talking about what they are, how to do work within them, and featuring artwork from the galleries. In this edition I will be talking about the
Textiles Gallery!What are Textiles?
Defintion from deviantART Gallery Description:
Art created by using fabric and natural woven materials including fashion/costume construction and hairpieces like wigs and falls. As the description implies, these works of art must be created using fabric materials that can range from actual clothing to clothing accessories. The sub-galleries of Textiles include
Accessories, Clothing, Costumes, Fiber Art, Plushies, and Quilting. (More on these categories later.)
General ResourcesHere are some websites that you might find helpful.
- Costumes.org is your one stop resource for everything that pertains to textiles. Tara Maginnis - the creator of the website - has compiled the most extensive list of resources to everything you could ever want that has to do with textiles on the internet.
- ~costumeguild, here on dA, has a huge listing of resources in their journal (generously compiled by `dedredhed). Check out this group and read, no matter if you're new or a guru to textiles.

BobsmadeThumb:
Why is this a good Textiles piece? This artist has a knack for creating one of a kind shoeware and other clothing accessories, and I believe that this piece is a showcase of that talent. This shows the originality that can be had within the Textiles gallery.

Why is this a good Textiles piece?A beautiful costume, a model to fit the part, and a photograph that speaks for itself.

There are many more great examples, which you can see for yourself
here! What are the Sub-Galleries of Textiles?
Here are the Sub-Galleries within Textiles in a little more detail.
- Accessories -
dA Gallery Description:
Clothing items that are not garments, such as handbags, ties, wigs, socks, wraps, and leg warmers, made of a textile based medium.
If your piece is not a piece of clothing, but can be worn still, might belong here (see above suggestions). If it is clothing then you should put it in Textiles > Clothing.
- Clothing -
dA Gallery Description:
General everyday garments including skirts, shirts, pants, dresses, jackets, and underwear, made mostly of a textile medium.
Please keep in mind that if your garment is NOT to be worn everyday, try the Textiles > Costumes gallery.
- Costumes -
dA Gallery Description:
Garments made for not-so-everyday use to portray a character, animal, or object, and are mostly of a textile medium.
Keep in mind that if your garment is to be worn everyday, or could be worn everyday, and is not used to portray the above list, it would probably be better suited for the Textiles > Clothing gallery.
- Fiber Art -
dA Gallery Description:
General artwork created with textiles through the application of paints, dyes, stitching, and/or other fabric manipulations.
Some things that you can think about submiting to the Fiber Art gallery are blankets, coverings, and other textiles that are not to be worn.
- Plushies -
dA Gallery Description:
Dolls and stuffed animals made by sewing a textile body and then stuffing to create a 3D shape.
Plushies, or Stuffed Animals / Toys, usually are made from pieces of fabric sewn together and then stuffed to give the piece a 3D shape as suggested in the dA description. Keep in mind that if your artwork is a doll that is not stuffed, it belongs in Artisan Crafts > Custom Dolls.
A good list of Plushie Tutorials can be found here; a great list compiled by `kittyvane.
- Quilting -
dA Gallery Description:
Blankets and tapestries made by quilting by sewing batting between two layers of pieced or un-pieced fabric.
Quilting can be defined as a coverlet for a bed, made of two layers of fabric with some soft substance, as wool or down, between them and stitched in patterns or tufted through all thicknesses in order to prevent the filling from shifting (dictionary.com).
I found a miscat! What do I do?
That's easy! Whenever you think you have found a miscategorization, there is one crucial thing that you need to do. Go to the deviation page, and in the Artist's Description box you will see a link titled, "Report Policy Violation" (It is located under the Picture information / Thumb code box). Go here, and click "Miscategorization" in the drop-down menu located next to the 'Type of Violation' section. In the 'Comment' section you will want to take the time to tell the Artisan Crafts Gallery Director (^
Myana) why it does not belong, and why it should be moved. Let her know a possible new home (category) for it, and any information that might be helpful to her in the process of dealing with the Miscat.
You can see how this could be done here:

Some things that don't belong in Textiles:
- Cosplay photographs do NOT belong in Textiles. If you did NOT make the costume do NOT submit it here. Submit it to your scraps.
- Photographs where the costume / clothing cannot be seen are not allowed in this gallery.
- Photographs of bought clothing.
- Photographs of random Cosplayers in which the submitter had nothing to do with the creation of the costume / outfit.
A good news article that has to do with many of the above can be found here.
- Make sure your wigs, wings, gloves etc. go in Textiles > Accessories.
- Designs and drawings of clothing/costumes belongs in Design & Interfaces
- Mask made out of various mediums go in AC > Misc
- Props and weapons to a costume don't belong in Costume, either AC > Misc or a fitting category depending on what material is used
