Teacher's Pet- What I learned about Anthro

^JunkbyJen:iconJunkbyJen: reports, January 28
Always fun to take a walk in another person's shoes and I had the delight of trading galleries for a week with ^skifi, a wonderful Anthro Gallery Director. I found out I didn't know so much about it, too.

--------------
Let's start off with what Anthro means:
:postit:Dictionary Definition
Anthropomorphism (aka "anthro"): Attribution of human motivation, characteristics, or behavior to inanimate objects, animals, plants, or natural phenomena. (Dictionary.com)

*Ok, right off, I always considered anthro 'animal' only. Sadly, I was WRONG! :D

These are key things to look for in Anthro:
Key Things to Look for in Anthros
:bulletred: Bipedal anatomy (walks upright on two legs)
:bulletred: Opposable thumbs (though not required)
:bulletred: Partakes in human activities and would likely wear human-like clothing.

I also always assumed that anthro could include those cuties with kitty ears and tails.

Nope, these are anime.

That is just a small example of what I did not know. Please see below for some very important points in classifying ANTHRO that I wasn't aware of:

:bulletred: Mythical creatures like mermaids and centaurs are fantasy.
:bulletred: Werewolves and minotaurs are also mythical creatures, therefore classified as fantasy, but are also considered anthro b/c they meet the key features of an anthro character, as listed above.
:bulletred: Totems such as trickster spirits based on animals with human anatomy are anthro. However, animals with the ability to turn human are fantasy.
:bulletred: Dragons are considered fantasy, but bipedal dragons that wear clothes or sport other aforementioned key features can qualify as anthro. This is a gray area at best.

So, you see...I found there was quite some confusion in this gallery! I'm pretty sure I'm not alone here either and I invite you please visit ^skifi and ^cooley to get to know them and their love of Anthro better! Thanks so much for your help, ^skifi  I really enjoyed it!

Classifications can be confusing anyway, but especially in such a category as anthro. Since I've been a big fan of Disney all my life, I've been a fan of the anthropomorphic as well

I find a lot of the classifications too deep and complicated to try to understand to be honest! I tend to therefore just go for fantasy and hope to goodness for the best! lol! If I get pushed out, then I do!

You probably already appreciate how difficult it is for yer normal-minded (or lesser-minded) aspiring artist to have much of a clue about classification, let alone fully understand the choices they have, which may not match their own preconceived ideas! I'm sure at one time things were much more easy... (But not necessarily on dA!)
