Great Prose Exposed: WordCount Feature #8

*WordCount:iconWordCount: reports, February 1
After a brief leave of absence in January, *WordCount is back in action for February and we’re happy to present our eighth prose feature. This is our first feature of the new year, and while we may have gone quiet publicly, behind the scenes our staff has been working just as diligently to pull another fine collection of pieces together. And as always, you'll find it jam-packed with some of the finest examples of prose on deviantArt. We hope you enjoy it!

:resume: 100 words or less

:bulletblue: Latest Entry by ~lorry

Humor: It’s the end for Eleanor—or is it?

:bulletblue: Three Sentence Story by: ~someorangegirl

General Fiction: This wonderful piece manages to capture autism from two different perspectives in three sentences.

:resume: 101-300 words

:bulletblue: Memoirs of John Keats by ~Timeon

Satire: Caution: this piece contains a gang of romantic poets, rampant irreverance, and liberal use of some colorful language; laughter is certain to result.

:bulletblue: Open Mic Night at the Jazz Bar by ~CynicalRomantic

Romantic: A perfect portrayal of emotion and atmosphere in under three hundred words.

:resume: 301-500 words

:bulletblue: Carry the Two by *tetemeko

Horror: A surreal piece of weird fiction about, as the author puts it, “a world where PTA members and silver Cadillac owners overreact to math problems.”

:bulletblue: My favorite drunk by =WineWriter

Life Stories: A melancholic look at how drunkard parents ruin their children, done with vivid imagery.

:resume: 501-1,000 words

:bulletblue: The Story of Jorge by ~anathemadevice

Children’s: A traditional moral fairytale... and it's about an insect!

:bulletblue: Dracula's picnic by ~BobbityJones

Humor: Vlad the Vampire scores his first date since the French Revolution with New Yorker, Gilda. Will he find love or a swift stake to the heart?

:resume: 1,001-3,000 words

:bulletblue: Good Morning by ~Angelovmusic

Theatre & Scripts: Picture this: you’re stuck riding an elevator 80 floors with your estranged spouse. What would you say?

:bulletblue: Be Mean by *FaeriesDrkDesire

Erotic: An erotic intermixing of emotions and subtle humor, with a splendid twist.

:resume: 3,001 - 5,000 Words

:bulletblue: Time bum by ~germboy

Science Fiction: What if we could go forward in time, but not back?

:bulletblue: The Voicemail of God by ~Lady-Xythis

Philosophical: The story of a woman who loses her way, only to be saved by "God”.

:resume: 5,001+ words

:bulletblue: Sickness and Health by *Rynnay

Fantasy: If you're looking for memorable characters, a little bit of action, with some witty dialogue sprinkled on top, look no further!

Published Works

:library: Soundzine

Soundzine is an online journal for the spoken word. Poetry and stories can be traced at least as far back as Homer, who recited his epics by torch or firelight. It was born and flourished in the milieu of the cadences, inflections and stresses of the human voice. We're not presumptuous enough to think we'll revolutionize the world of literature by turning to the roots of things, which is the real meaning of "radical," but we do think that the modern digital world offers an opportunity to enrich and enliven an art that has waned of late.

The deviantArt literature community is not only represented in the staff of ~Soundzine but also featured in the issues! Check out all four installmentsreleased so far and reconnect with the spoken word.

We also highly recommend adding the Soundzine deviantArt account to your watchlist to keep abreast of future releases (and the occasional contest):

Meet Our Contributors: *ThornyEnglishRose

*ThornyEnglishRose is one of our newest staff members, but she has been an established member of the dA lit community for some time. When it comes to *WordCount, *ThornyEnglishRose is our resident children’s literature seeker, but like most of our staff members (and this month’s feature proves) she doesn’t shy away from other genres!

On top of all that, *ThornyEnglishRose has earned two Daily Deviations in just the past two months (see above)! :deviation: We’re pleased to have such a talented deviant on *WordCount staff. Here are just a few examples of *ThornyEnglishRose’s other fine work:

:bulletblue: The New Boy

Children’s: This piece of teen fiction has just one moral: never kiss a mummy!

:bulletblue: Harry, Me and Married Life

Romantic: Meet Phillipa and Harry: between twins and murder trials, they manage to make it work.

:bulletblue: A Dying Wish

Life Stories: Two sons search for the one element missing from their father’s life, just as that life is coming to an end.
