Helewidis in Fractal Land
Words like
Fractal math, Mandelbrot Set, Julia set, Parameters, Fractal Generating Programs are no longer strangers to me thanks to a project called "Trading Galleries" that the Artist Relations Team has embraced.
By now you already know that I was paired with the lovely miss

who pointed me the right direction about Fractals and from who I learned how easy Fractal can be but, at the same time, not so simple like eating an apple!
I learned that fractal math was born from the will of mathematicians to try to tame a special part of math:
"
These are mathematical constructs which don't fit into normal (Euclidean) geometry very well, and for a long time mathematicians considered things like these as "monsters" to be avoided - lines of thought that defied rational explanation in known terms. " (Font: Fractal Art for Dummies)
And that's were Julia*2 and Mandelbrot*3 kick in!
To sum it up, their work is the base of the current fractal artworks and without them I wouldn't be writing about this, I believe! And one thing that amazed me was to see the equation that allowed such beautiful pieces - and to know that it is really something so simple that is within the principle of parsimony is even a bigger turn on-to fractal for me!

I confess, I never been into Math myself, but after learning about this genre, Fractal Art sounds very fun! I wish they would teach it in schools instead of those useless*1 equations... and I'll most certainly make some Fractals myself from now on! Why don't you try it too? Need some incentive? Look at what you could be doing:

Yes, you would need to learn the ABC's and practice, but in the end if you understand the basis of Fractal and have patience you'll be able to do such wonderful things!

I believe this could be said for any type of ART, and I appreciate the opportunity to trade this kind of knowledge with such a nice person like ^
Sophquest whose gallery is most certainly out of my comfortable zone, but one I now admire and respect a lot!!!
Which isn't hard, when one sees works like these:

Wait, I'm not through yet!
Now for those who think that Fractal Art requires drawing and brushing: the answer is NO, it doesn't! and for me that's half of the fun of it, because I really can't draw well and Fractal Generating Programs allow us to present works that most of the time look like something that cold be done with a lot of drawing-skills!

At the same time it isn't just all computer-work, it requires specific skills and a lot of patience:
You have to build your parameters (and save them along the way otherwise if you loose them you'll be putting days, sometimes years of work to the drain); find original shapes; choose your colors right (complementary colors will do a better trick, especially for beginners who otherwise could clash too much different colours and end up with a lousy essentially non-attractive fractal) and make it clean with a good render... *phew* are you here with me yet?
Good, here's some more eye-candy for you, then:

Fractal Artist of the Year 2007:
Besides having a HUGE quality gallery *
Zueuk made the "3D Hack of Apophysis" and presents us with great amounts of awesome work! He's one of those artists who can make beautiful things appear in fractals, like a shield, a war zone scene, etc. But more than talk about his gallery, I'll feature my fav fractals from his gallery and invite you to visit him, say hello! and see his talent of transforming math into art!

Notes:
*1: useless here in terms of not bringing any beauty to the world, just headaches and money to the calculators fabrics - anyway, I may just have a very biased opinion on it, since I'm more into letters than numbers
*2: The filled Julia set
. is a picture in the x-plane, also called the dynamical plane,
. records the fate of all orbits for x2 + c for a fixed c. There is one Julia set for each value of c.
Reference Article: [link]
So, If you zoom in on a portion of a Julia set (any one), you will see the same detail, but repeated on a smaller and smaller scale.

*3: The Mandelbrot set
. is a picture in the c-plane, also called the parameter plane,
. records the fate of the orbit of 0 for all possible c-values.
Reference Article: [link]
The Mandelbrot detail is never the same twice, and there are some very exotic and bizarre shapes in the set. You can technically keep zooming forever!!!

Finally, I wish to thank AR and ^
Sophquest for this fun experience and for all your patience with me and to every single Fractal Artist, for their inspiring works and time!
Please take some time to check out the features and if you start doing fractal after this news article let me know and give me the link to your work!

Also, if you liked the news article fav it, so that the artists I featured can get the attention they much deserve!
Thank you!
