Every month in Comics and Cartoons, we are asking professionals to answer some questions asked by the aspiring comic artist or writer. Since there is never a single correct answer, several people are polled and their answers are compiled into one article, providing insight from different angles.
We challenge writers and artists to self publish new material for this week, and offer it to their local stores. We ask for retailers to take this as an opportunity to showcase local independent talent on the new release shelves. We encourage fans to break from their buying habits and try something new.
This is the official resource collection for the Comics and Cartoons Gallery. If you're just getting started or want quick resources, look for the symbol before an entry. These are resources that provide a good overview, while the rest go more in depth and into technical details.
This week, ^misskittyoooo and I "traded" galleries. As many of you know, I am the anthro gallery director and ^misskittyoooo is the gallery director for the Comics and Cartoons gallery. If you would like to see what she wrote about the anthro gallery, click here.
Pages in the cartoons and comics gallery. A common error in this gallery is confusing "pages" with "strips." A "page" is simply a whole page from a comic book. Here's an example from ^misskittyoooo's gallery:
Strips in the cartoons and comics gallery. "Strips" are what we see in the newspaper when we read the funnies. A "strip" is a set of sequential images that usually tell a stand-alone story but are often part of a larger one too. Here's an example from ^cooley's gallery:
Strips can be one image too! "Strips" can also contain only one image. Even if there isn't an associated sequence, one picture can tell a story too. Here's another example form ^cooley's gallery:
The cartoons of the cartoons and comics gallery. "Cartoons" are quite similar to strips: "A drawing depicting a humorous situation" (Dictionary.com). Often, "cartoons" exaggerate or provide a caricaturization of a character or scene. DeviantART defines cartoons as images conforming to the above definition, without the use of captions. Here's an example from ^misskittyoooo's gallery:
I can probably help with this. If it's sequential art, most definitely Comics. If it's just profile art or something like that, then Anthro. If it's not one of those two, then I'd leave it to your own discretion. Make good use of your, uh, artistic license.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.

I know comics and cartoons are deceptively complicated when you have to define them, but you did an awesome job.
