So you want to make your personal, state-of-the-art lolcat? Check out this tutorial, you'll see it's easier than making a coffee and drinking it up!

First step: choose a funny picture

Choose a picture you like. No matter the quality or the subject: pretty much any picture's ok, as long as you feel it's ok. Of course, a real LOLcat requires a real cat, but you can achieve nice results with other critters as well, or even with celebrity pics

Just remember: if you're not the author of the pic, before using it make sure you ask the owner for permission, and most of all don't forget to link to the original in case you're going to post your lolcat somewhere (such as DA).

Step two: think about a funny caption

Check out [link] for explanation, and spend some time on [link] for inspiration.

Most common formats include:
   I'm in your xxx yyying your zzz
   Invisible xxx
   I can haz xxx, please

but they're not mandatory - juice your imagination!

Step three: write the caption

Quoting an article by Anil Dash,

If it ain't Impact or Arial Black or some other nondescript sans serif font, it ain't lolcat. White letters with a black outline are a must.

Now I think it's high time you open TypeTool and start writing down your caption, using either Arial Black or Impact (this is not negotiable ). Some will go for CAPS only, but that's up to you. Better results are obtained by cranking down the space between fonts (character palette > tracking).



If your caption's lengthish, split it in two parts to be placed in the upper and lower sector of the picture, respectively.

Finally, fonts have to be outlined in black.

Select layer style -> stroke.

Outline thickness depends on the chosen font size - as a rule of thumb, stick to 2-8 px. After a few trials, it seems to me 1/20th of font size (rounded up) is the optimum ratio (e.g. font 60 -> 3px outline).

Step four: you're done!
