The Artist Relations Team Edu-Swap

One of the many activities and projects the Artist Relations Team has taken on was to "trade" galleries with another of our fellow Gallery Directors. For this project I was given the Film > Animation Gallery and I switched with ^guruubii.


What is Animation all about?

When I just started about to learn about animation, I was like OMG! will anything make sense to me? its going to go all over my head. But ^guruubii made it all easy for me.
So I started taking down notes, and tried to understand about the entire process of how animation is done and how movies are created, how do they manage the Film and Animation galleries in deviantART and what are the basic important pointers.


I first started off by understanding the various Categories of Animation and what are the tools used to create :

Animation itself has various categories they have been divided into:
Classical animation -
Classical animation is 2D animation which is hand drawn. It can be done and created in a 2D software like Plastic Animation Paper or Toon Boom, or they can be even created traditionally with the paper and the pencils.




3D animation -
Animation which is created that is done in a 3d program like maya, or 3DS Max.



Stopmotion -
Stop animation is done using figure posed taken frame by frame. ^Nico1 handles the type of stop motion that is made of film like "Photos of people".
Animation stop motion has to have pose-able figures and animation in it, and not just sequential photos.




Well as much technical the animation Gallery is, ^guruubii's duties are even more hectic, and she surely does handle them with utmost responsibility and ease

Her duties include,
Going through the animation submissions, checking the gallery for copyright violations, and recruiting from outside sites to gain more membership in the Film gallery.



Problems and issues


The biggest challenge for ^guruubii and the animation team has been dealing with music issues. The Application form guidelines clearly states that the music right needs to be mentioned, but after repetetive announcements and even after educating everyone about the use of permission and rights to music, there have been several submissions where people never take permission. ( C'mon guys! Its a simple regulation not to use copyrighted music, and the guidelines are made for your benefit so that you don't fall into trouble even outside of deviantART, plus its a really good habit! )

People often use classical music as well, which they mostly misunderstand as a public domain. It has been stated that Written music is public domain, but the rights to use the performances like orchestra or conductor etc. in their films is completely against the guidelines. The performances have the particular rights to the music performances, and hence they cannot be used.

So this issue led me to ask ^guruubii that how easy is it to use music if there are copyright issues. So the answer was very simple. There are lots of resources where music can be used for free. There are also artists like Moby, who has given people the right to use his music without even seeking his permission. and for the rest, one can just contact the music artist and get permission from them.

Clubs and Events on Film and Animation on DeviantART

There are even exciting community clubs in deviantART exclusively for animation and film. The ^deviantartfilm headquarters is essential for the community development and keeping people updated.
A drawback about the film community is that people post thier films and leave. So inorder to make them stay and integrate more by bridging the gap between users and building a community with people, ^deviantartfilm plays a challenging role!
