Artistic Nudes - A study by Fahd A. Paracha

=fahap:iconfahap: reports, 2d 8h ago
Depictions of nudity refers to nudity in all the artistic disciplines including vernacular and historical depictions. Nudity in art has generally conformed — with some variation — to social standards for public nudity; in cultures where nudity was accepted, nude figures in painting and sculpture were as well.

A better way to organize deviations?

The actual way of organizing content is somewhat not perfect, cause it links two things that should be independant : genre and tech of an image.

deviantART's Mature Content Hypocrisy

*sephys-little-cloud:iconsephys-little-cloud: reports, 2d 12m ago
Why does the deviantART staff refuse to enforce their own rules sometimes? When it comes to prohibited content such as pornography and underage nudity, why do they let some obscene material stay up, while innocent deviations get deleted?

deviantART CEA; FAQ #565 and Policy Interpretation

=exsecror:iconexsecror: reports, 21h 1m ago
The purpose or rather intent of this news article is to address the increasing concerns by many deviantART members (including myself) as to the recent results from the new Policy Violation Reporting System and the deviantART Copyright Etiquette and Administration (CEA) team. I should stress that this is not meant as an attack or attempt to defame what the CEA team does. They do a fantastic job at making sure that deviantART is clean but rather it addresses a serious concern about interpretations of two FAQs, namely #565 and their compliance with United States Code Statutes.

The Implications of New Advertisement Positions

~Luscara:iconLuscara: reports, February 11
Having been a member of Deviant Art for a couple of years now, I have to say that I love this site. The accessibility that is afforded for my art to be seen is not only welcome but also needed. Most love the systems that allow us to show appreciation for other artists, and even appreciate that Deviant Art makes the site work through member “donation” and advertisement sales. This should not be seen as an irrational rant about how advertising is evil. I don’t believe that it is.

We have this new collections system; the interface is amazing and very user-friendly. The problem comes from the new advertisement position that came with it. Who had the idea to put a gigantic ad in the middle of everyone’s gallery? Shouldn’t people other than the administrators have been asked about this? There is something to be said for mercy and discretion. With this in mind, hear me out.

Many would love to have subscriptions to Deviant Art, but what if you can’t afford one? There is the problem that many of the artists on this site are struggling, unpaid artists who are still in school and living at home with their families, or barely making rent. We cannot afford subscriptions right now, and having that thrown in our faces does not make us want to be part of the Deviant Art family. There have been many comments made that the first reaction to the ads was disgust and the want to delete galleries and never come back to Deviant Art. That would have been a shame; there are so many artists on here that deserve to have their art known through this wonderful site. So here is a suggestion instead of just saying that it makes us angry. Keep the ads; it is after all how you make money. That is fine. Work with us though, change the position, or change the shape. Make our art more important than the money. Was that not the original point of this site? Making online promotion available to the masses? Well, we need something, give us a banner ad at the top of the page, or if you want to keep the ads in the galleries, make them lengthwise banners. This is the kind of solution that could benefit everyone involved. If you think that a banner at the top isn’t enough, fine, give us a banner at the bottom as well. As long as the galleries are one solid block, then we will be happy. Seeing our work chopped up, after we have gone to the trouble of organizing the work to suit our purposes is what bothers us. You have given us all these gallery options, so let us use them, without your insistent pushing for subscriptions.

Yeah, this sounds a lot like whining, it probably is, but do you like seeing a very large square ad that takes up 3/4 of your gallery, and repositions your work? No. So, mercy is needed. Give us a bone. Talk to us before you do something like this. We know the ads are part of the system, but they could be more aesthetic, give us that. Please, give us our galleries back. We love DA, but how can you continue to love something that is abusing you?

Devious Comments

Yeah, I just noticed that.
Since I joined here in March 2007, there's been more and more advertising on the site.
It might be encouraging dA members to get a subscription, but I don't have a credit card.

This site is supposed to be about the art and community, not money.

I was just thinking about writing a news post after waiting to see some sort of official announcement about the new ads, I'm glad to see someone thinking the same as I do :)

I hope we can get some sort staff attention because otherwise it really does make me feel like DevArt just pays lipservice to the idea of being about the artists rather than about the site and the business of making money.

i agree on the in-gallery ad placements, whole-heartedly. i also agree about talented young artists who can't pay rent, even if it's a cliche it's not one without merit. DA loves AD$ more than ART these days and that's really a shame. Look at all the hate I received over my pointing this out. No one has been able to show that the in-gallery ads are preferred, necessary, or even not intended to annoy users. [link]

I believe in advertising, but I also believe that art comes first, especially on a site like this. If I wanted to be slammed with ads every time I logged on, I would be on another site (to remain unnamed)... but I'm here.

Yeah it seems a bit weird to make a news post about something that you figure someone from the staff should have made some sort of announcement about. It's also a little weird to see that so far the closest thing we've had to an official response is senior members telling people to basically "sub or stfu" *sigh*

Still, onward we strive!

I'm not shutting the f**k up and I'm not subscribing. They have two ads on my front page, and they had a banner above my gallery until a month ago. I will complain until they put it back. I will keep at this, I'm a red-head... I don't know the meaning of too much. LOL. ;)
