`GeneratingHype on letters, editing and GDship

^lovetodeviate:iconlovetodeviate: reports, August 30
An interview with ex-GD, writer, editor, fascinating person: `GeneratingHype. Here are some tidbits from the interview (which I recommend reading in full):

"Letters presuppose a sort of authenticity, and I truly believe that a story—no matter the form—needs to be authentic and believable.

"Sometimes I wish I had stories such as "I wrote my first published poem at three and a half!" or "I started writing stories at two!", but writing never came easy for me and is still not very easy for me.

The Use of Adverbs in Fiction Writing

=DarcKnyt:iconDarcKnyt: reports, August 29
Adverbs are the endangered species of the adult fiction world. They're frowned on like putting a Baby Ruth bar in a punch bowl at a wedding reception -- not a good idea. They're also indicative of weak writing ... but why? This article covers why adverbs are evil and what you can do to avoid using them.

#underlit: DASTARDLY PLANS vol.1

*salshep:iconsalshep: reports, February 12
UNDERLIT RADIO-- COMING SOON TO AN EARHOLE NEAR YOU!

Ya srs, RADIO. But first:

:w00t: THE UNDERLIT PROMPT-GENERATOR

Want to contribute to a prompt-generator designed not just to help dA-writers along, but people everywhere? We’re looking for creative, original prompts for prose and poetry to include in our generator. The more the merrier!

You Can Contribute To the Underlit Prompt-generator Here.

 POETRY IS…

The Poetry Is… Project is still running, and we’d like to know what YOU THINK poetry is, in a short paragraph. Note your thoughts to *underlit

Keep your eye out for more of these “collective” projects in the near future.

:omfg: THE I SPY LIT COMP

Just a couple of weeks to go before THE. BIGGEST. LIT. COMP. EVER. closes for submissions.

Read this article for details.

Don’t forget, we have a visual lit category as well, including COMIC submissions, and that you can enter ONCE in each category ( Prose, Poetry, or Visual)

 WE GOT YOUR UNDERLIT MUGS RIGHT HERE!

All proceeds from the sale of our mugs and other goodies (available in the *underlit gallery) will go toward purchasing more bandwidth for Underlit Radio. More designs are forthcoming-- and T-SHIRTS soon too, we hope!

:| OK, CAN WE GET TO THE PART ABOUT RADIO NOW?

#underlit’s evil geniuses ( including the technologically wizardish ~thecoolbeane ) have come up with a plan to give literature more exposure via a listening audience. Right now, we can shoutcast to around 200 people, and have a podcast organised too, but hope to expand this to a far greater audience once we’ve all got the bugs and kinks worked out, and a variety of reliable programs to offer.

We currently have around eight half-hour program slots available per week. One of those slots is an official #underlit segment, so there’s seven up for grabs. The “official” show will host segments that are not from regular contributors, such as radio-plays (we have one under production already, produced by the lovely ~withoutspace ), interviews, and other special features.

Test programs are in the making, and we’re looking for people who might be interested in running regular half-hour shows on a weekly basis. If you think you’d like to participate, here’s what to do, and what the deal is:

:bulletpurple: Note: NO MUSIC SHOWS. This is a LIT-ORIENTED project. We cannot stream commercial music, end of story.

:bulletpurple: You must be able to commit to a series of at least 6 to 10 x 30-minute shows, to be aired weekly.

:bulletpurple: You must be willing to learn the necessary skills to develop, produce and upload your show each week, and to help promote both the show and the project. Our production manager will offer training, so you’ll know what to do.

:bulletpurple: Shows have to be literature-oriented. We are allowing a wide interpretation of what that means, and hope for a mix of serious and humorous material. However, there’s a few things we are not allowing:

-- racist/sexist/defamatory or other highly offensive commentary. Discussion is one thing, but Underlit Radio is not the place the air whatever nasty shit might be on your liver. Breach of this will result in a perma-ban from all #underlit projects.

-- stupid crap. We’re here to entertain a wide audience. We are not gonna give airtime to somebody waffling about video games, ranting about their cat’s sore eye, bitching about somebody they don’t like, or sending shouts to their friends. We’re gonna pull the plug on that, real fast.

-- breach of copyrighted materials. All works read on Underlit Radio must have the proper permissions in place for transmission. We are making it very clear that any breach is the sole responsibility of the person running that segment.

:bulletpurple: Apply by note to *underlit, with a plan for at least 3 x 30 mins of airtime, and preferably with a link to a recorded example of your presentation style. The ideas you present will determine whether we accept your application, so put some thought into it. Of course, we will not be able accept every application, but will keep the ones we approve on file for future reference.

MORE NEWS UPDATES COMING SOON!

We’ll be announcing the Underlit Radio schedule, the prompt generator and lots of other good stuff in a little bit. STAY TUNED!

#underlit-- not just a chat, a creative community.

I forgot to add that if all the tests shows and early shoutcast production goes well, we're looking into expanding our bandwith-- which means more on-air hours, more slots for shows, a much wider audience and so on. Who knows, we could take this to other galleries as well. I'm sure some art-orientiented programs wouldn't go amiss, even now, as long as they are interesting.

Sky's the limit, folks, but we can't do it without your support and participation. Thanks to all who have raised their hands so far, it's appreciated.

Also, I need some poetry to read for our loop-broadcast which will go to air continuously prior to our scheduled broadcasts-- ten or so good poems would do (I am already reading a selection of poems from the latest underlit 20/20 prompt-comp) , but I need permissions to broadcast. Leave the links here, if you like, to save my notebox being cluttered.

Three flash-fic pieces would be great, also, but I'm not up for reading those-- I'd accept good-quality recordings, however. Just note-and-link *underlit, if you can help out there.

I'd REALLY like to see ( er.. hear) some show ideas from the comics crowd, as well. Any takers? Note *underlit!
