DENYING THE POVERTY DRAFT-THE SOLDIER AS A SYMBOL

=whitetrashpalace:iconwhitetrashpalace: reports, 1d 43m ago
The Poverty Draft, Politics, Symbols, and the inconvenience of being human.

Even in times of war, the Soldier as an individual is of no consequence. The Soldier is a symbol, a simple pawn in a culture war. The Soldier is either a villain, or a Hero. The Soldier always serves for the honor of his country, not his paycheck. The Soldier is faithful, as there are 'no atheists in the trenches'. The Soldier is Combat Arms. The Soldier is male, he married a young white girl, and he has a baby on the way, whom he has never met.

The Soldier is a romantic ideal.

A Feminist Perspective on Questionable Images

~sick-snowangel:iconsick-snowangel: reports, July 1
Sex and sexuality in art are some of my favorite things, and certainly sometimes arousal is part of this, but more importantly, it is FAR MORE than about simple arousal, as porn is. One of my deviantart friends, :iconcypherthepanicartist: , said that art of a sexual nature can “ provoke thoughts about our dreams, fears, desires, and place in the world"...yes! Well done art that deals with sex exposes the soul of the subject or act in question, not just the naughty bits. I feel that any kind of work on this site that looks at sexuality in a thoughtful or artistic or critical or celebratory, etc. way is certainly appropriate content for an art site, because, of course, this work is actually ART.

Graffiti: Art or Vandalism?

~jjankk:iconjjankk: reports, July 7
This is an extremely old article from 2005 but I found it interesting.
It explains how some graffiti artists began to sell their art for money. There are people in the world who think that graffiti is art and not vandalism and other who feel the opposite way. I feel like graffiti is a work of art and should not be banned or should not be against the law. Even though I consider graffiti art I don't think it should be sold to galleries and to people. I think graffiti was meant for the streets and that's where it should stay. What's your opinion on this topic?

FairExposure: The good, the bad ... the solution?

=HinoNeko:iconHinoNeko: reports, February 12, 2008
So it would seem that just about everyone has noticed the new FairExposure system. On the off chance you haven't, this is pretty much the definitive information source at this point.

Basically, it's taken the Popular system and made it topsy-turvy . . . categories that generally go unnoticed find themselves on the front page, and artists with thousands of pageviews are suddenly among those with millions.

Some like it. Some don't. I, personally, am not terribly fond of it, but like everything, there are good points and bad points. So I'm going to step back, look at this, and throw out some ideas that just might make everyone happy.

The Good:

1) Lesser-known artists get exposure.
Generally the point of FairExposure, and perhaps what has been the biggest success with it. Who's =Archie-The-RedCat? Or =Toonikun? I have no clue, but thanks to FairExposure I have been treated to some of their art much sooner than I would have been otherwise.

2) More obscure categories get their time in the limelight.
Apparently, "Photography > Urban & Rural > Gardens, Parks & Cemeteries" lends itself to some high-quality photos. Who knew?

3) All Time Popular looks different for the first time in about a year.
There's still some of the old ones up there, but most of it's all new . . . including a couple I've never seen before!

The Bad

1) It feels less organic.
Something with 122 faves ahead of something with 322? It just doesn't feel natural anymore . . . like a machine is choosing what's popular more than people are.

2) More obscure categories get their time in the limelight.
Desktop Screenshots? Honestly?

3) It's more lottery-style now.
Under the old system, artists would take years to get recognized on DA, until they eventual did reach whatever goal they had set. 10 faves? 100? 1,000? Doesn't feel as good when one is competing with an error message. (And it's not just "artist vs. artist", either. The user behind that error message has pieces that I, personally, would prefer they have their 15 minutes of fame for. Why an effortless Windows mishap?)

The Solution

1) Go back to the old system.
This? Never happened. None of it. Pay no attention to the antics behind the curtain.

2) Stick with this new thing.
Man up! Change is good, after all, and it's not like the end of the world.

3) Both.
This is my personal favorite. Opinions on this seem to be split right down the middle - most everyone who knows about this either hates it or loves it. Why not give both sides something that makes them happy? Having FairExposure as another slot, alongside Newest, Prints, and the old-fashioned Popular, would allow people to choose what they wanted to browse. After all, there's no point in fighting over Chocolate and Vanilla when you've got a case of Neapolitan!

What say you, DA? Brilliant or a nutcase?

They should at least label the "popular" section as "popular" any more, because it's not popular, just "what is going to become popular today because we randomly put it on this page".

Seriously – people who are looking for stuff randomly can look at "newest", surely? At least that way when the pretty much random crop turns out to have total duds in it, they can just refresh.

Mine, maybe do both but put it on the side...but generally throw them away...

and a random generator in place...that can be edited in such you can include or not include desktop screenshots, dAStamps, and whatnot...

I like the third solution. I mean we are used to the "old" system and we (mostly) liked it (i think :))
and I think the fair exposure system should get its chance too and having both on the first page seems to be the only way to make the change easy and "painless"

~Sklarvv:iconSklarvv: Feb 12, 2008, 2:58:51 PM
I actually didn't know about it till you posted this XD

It's a nice idea, I hadn't seen a Lit piece on the front page in my over a year time here, it could open people's eyes and all that poetic crap.

But it's not Popular anymore. Most of the artists who hit popular every time they post are loved for a REASON (most...)

I love the idea, but it shouldn't replace "popular". Give it it's own slot.

Yeah, error messages and screenshots don't need to get attention. It's only been a couple days and I'm fearing what will pop up in the "popular" section. I think a solution is to have both; a popular section with things that are actually popular, and a section for their "FairExposure" thing. Though really, they need to find a way for only actual art to get put into it.
What they've done is upsetting lots of people, even those that have gotten into the popular section now. Something needs fixing.
=Fairy-red-hime:iconFairy-red-hime: Feb 12, 2008, 3:03:09 PM
Like many people have said, the best solution would be keep the Popular section the way it was, and make a new slot thingy for FairExposure.

Hmm. Personally, I think you all spend too much time worrying about these things and should go off and make new art. :iconpanicatthediscoplz:
No really. I didn't even notice the difference in teh popular catagory until I read a rant about it. I agree with most people and vote for option three.
