The Influence of Japan

*blacklavaPRINTS:iconblacklavaPRINTS: reports, 1d 10h ago
This article is based around the influence that other countries have absorbed into their own culture and artwork from Japanese art and lifestyle. Thumbnails follow an article from people among deviantART, some came forth and submitted thumbs themselves while I requested some from others. Thank you everyone who has participated in giving my article foundations.

Unfair rules the Fair

~Aunvi:iconAunvi: reports, February 13
So we're having a little uproar with the new Fair Exposure algorithm on dA. Oh deary, drama has come at us in a code-based equation, and for some reason, IT'S WRONG!

Like always, there is some flaw to a new system or code on dA. This is more about the people opposing the system- and I'm not saying this new system is flawless, but there appears to be an appearances of similar arguments that can be debated.

Is this new system Fair? Is it Unfair? Are people getting the exposure they deserve? Are artists who were previously featured in the popular category no longer getting the exposure they deserve? Does the popular category feature outstanding artists, a large variety of art, and quality deviations? Do we let tiny pretty colorful or detailed thumbnails on the front page that others have promoted stand for our tastes? Is what other people choose what you really want to look at it? Are these pieces of 'crap' forced into our faces for us to have to look at all day!?

Not really.

Hi. Welcome to deviantART. If you go to the front page there are a few rows of the different categories you can browse through at dA. These are the default thumbnails. If you don't want these "terrible pieces of art" waved in front of your face every time you come to deviantArt then their is a lovely customizable button. (It's been there for a while.) With this button you can view the categories you want, and even delete the current ones you don't want to look at. It's like when you put the crap you want on your bedroom door. We all decorate our own little deviantART doors the way we want to, so we don't have to look at the default original "yucky" door we had before. It's really simple.

If you don't like what's on the front page then go look through some of the pages in the gallery to find what it is you're looking for, it's not like it's locked or impossible to get to. It's one more click away. Not enough variety? Then, if you haven't tried yet, go look through the pages of art in that gallery rather than the front page, or just have your front page show the popular category of different types of art all over dA, because that's what the customizable button is there for.

Let's take a loot into the definition of what's Fair: "free from bias, dishonesty, or injustice: a fair decision; a fair judge. free from favoritism or self-interest or bias or deception; conforming with established standards or rules; "a fair referee"; "fair deal"; "on a fair footing"; "a fair fight"; "by fair means or foul" "

It's Fair Exposure. Not "The Best Exposure" or "Excellent Exposure" it's "Fair." It's all evened out. Everyone now has an equal and even opportunity to get on the front page to get the exposure they may or may not "deserve." The best will not always prevail in this system. I believe that isn't too difficult to comprehend, but we all seemed to be under the disillusionment that "fair" means we will have the best art and artists on dA just magically appearing before us on the dA front page. That some algorithm has made it THAT much easier to decide what WE want. There isn't any computer code having the ability to create the equation for the choices people make. It is a formula based on numbers and variables that follows a pattern. The pattern displays deviants that are overlooked or have not received the popularity of the popular deviants before them, and it doesn't show the same deviant over and over again everyday. It is not a formula for each individual deviant's tastes. Not yet, ever, never (Until AI is perfected. Whoever does that would definitely win the noble prize.)

Know that it's fair as far as the definition of fair is. It is unbiased and gives everyone an equal chance, (And if they are art thieves then it would make it that much easier to report them and then get them off the front page.) Want something up to your standards? Then be your own algorithm and go out and find your own equation to find art that you will enjoy.

 I love the new system now, I can't wait till all the bugs are fixed. Some of the popular artists need to stop complaining and learn to share the spot-light. I'm not up there yet and I don't mind. ;) It's nice to see new talent mixed with new.

"Aw, you're both just a couple of lousy blanks..."- Sarge from Red VS Blue
~artlmntl:iconartlmntl: Feb 17, 2008, 9:20:24 PM
Actually, there was a gold mine of statistical information in the old system that has been swept away with the new. Used to be, you could call up the "All Time" entry for any category and see what works were the all-time most popular. You could also look at any point in time and see what was most popular, giving a sense of what the community was doing at any point in time. Near as I can tell, that opportunity is now gone.

The most rational proposal I heard was to run the old system and the new system side by side, giving everyone what they want. I liked that idea.
~Aunvi:iconAunvi: Mar 22, 2008, 10:26:42 PM
I didn't know about the sweeping away of all the stats. Haven't heard that one brought up yet. I like that better than people stretching the idea radically one way or another.

It would be nice if the two systems could run side by side, but I think the coding for the whole thing would be a little more complex than before. Considering the popular system shows up in every category, and isn't customizable at the moment, it would seem fairly complex to have two separate systems working at the same time, doing the same thing in different ways for each user just to show certain deviations for each user. I think it would be more demanding on the bandwith - depending on how it was coded, but I think it could be done.

Also I think it would defeat the whole idea of what's "popular" if there were two sets of popular deviations for each category... It could also get fairly confusing.
