From the beginning of time legends of vampires have existed on this place we call Earth. The interesting, distinguishing mark of the vampire is that unlike other "monsters", the vampire has its roots in nearly every part of the world. From Ancient Greece to modern Day, the Vampire has been eternally preying on our imagination, forcing us to ask ourselves whether those things we dismiss as myths are just that...or more.
* * * * * * Good to know...
A vampires is a mythical creature who overcomes death by sucking the blood from living humans. The most common variation of the myth portrays the vampire as a dead person who rises from the at night to seek his victim from the realm of the sleeping.
Vampire myths go back thousands of years and occur in almost every culture around the world. Their variety is almost endless; from red eyed monsters with green or pink hair in China to the Greek Lamia which has the upper body of a woman and the lower body of a winged serpent; from vampire foxes in Japan to a head with trailing entrails known as the Penanggalang in Malaysia. However, the vampires we are familiar with today, although mutated by fiction and film, are largely based on Eastern European myths. The vampire myths of Europe originated in the far East, and were transported from places like China, Tibet and India with the trade caravans along the silk route to the Mediterranean. Here they spread out along the Black Sea coast to Greece, the Balkans and of course the Carpathian mountains, including Hungary and Transylvania.
The word 'Vampire', until now unknown, became used as a term for the very first time in 1726, following thousands of reports of vampirism due to the plague. It was first coined in German as "Vanpir" in a report of one case of vampirism. This evolved into "vampyre" in 1732 (used in French) and finally into the English word "Vampire" later that same year. This was the beginning of the end for the vampire as we know it...
Visually Identifying the Vampire eyes: most vampires have bulging, bloodshot or red-iris eyes. This emphasizes the vampires wild or animalistic nature. Because most vampires also have the ability to control minds or mesmerize their victims, the eyes are an important tool, and so need to be obvious. Sometimes a vampires unblinking stare is the only clue to the audience that the vampire is controlling or trying to control someones mind. The color of the eye may also indicate the vampires emotionsespecially blood lust. skin color: the blue-purple color of people who have died due to a lack of oxygen (asphyxiation) teeth: fangs are the most obvious of vampire traits. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes. In Nosferatu Count Orlock does not have elongated canines but rodents teeth. The folkloric vampire had only many sharp teeth, but not fangs specifically. In early vampire movies, such as Lugosis Dracula there were no fangs at all. Lon Chaney, Jr. is credited with bringing the first set of fangs to the screen in the 1950s. Though fangs are a relatively new addition to the vampires list of traits, they are by far and away the most recognizable and the most popular. More on: [link]
Vampire protect & how to kill them Well we all know the basic of protecting are selves from a blood sucker thanks to Hollywood. If you were asked how to protect yourself against these creatures of the night you would say something like garlic, crosses, and holy water...
You probably only know one way to kill a vampire; to put a stake through its heart, or if he walked into the sun. Well the stake thing, yes that was done by people loads, and in the sun part, not quiet true. They merely thought that they come out at night and go back to there grave to sleep. Theres few folklore where the vampire was seen during the day, but these were usually the less violent ones. Back to the stake, yes this was how you killed vampire in many folklore, but usually this wasnt the only thing people did.
Usually a stake was enough, but not always. Some people didnt care if the vampire was dead or alive, they just wanted it to stay in his grave and leave them alone. In some places in the world to just prevent him from coming from his grave to terrorize them they would cut the leg muscles of the corpse and stick pins in its calves and thighs. In the Greek island of Clio, they had some interesting thoughts on vampires. The thought vampires could never repeat what they said, so they would never answer the first time someone says their name, and only answer then their name is said a second time. They had some highly recommended ways to kill a vampire. A) Cut off his head, B) Tear his heart out and let the corpse rot above ground, or C) Drive a large nail through its temple or forehead. Now there is one way to kill a vampire practiced in Old Russia and Poland. The villages would take the corpse of someone they thought was a vampire, made paste out of it, and then ate it.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
