Mini-DDs Vol. 69

*SlyDante:iconSlyDante: reports, February 17, 2008
Okay, so welcome to another edition of Mini-DDs, the set of features that aims to deliver you DD-worthy artwork! Of course, if you noticed the summary outside, you might be able to tell that we'll be discussing a little something else here in the introduction as well. And if you just came here directly, then you should know that I'm going to talk about one of the biggest inslts to me & Mini-DDs out there in DA right now: FairExposure.

Now, some of you may be thinking "How the f*** is FairExposure related to a batch of features? Shouldn't this dumbass be talking about this in his journal instead?"

Well, yes, there are parts about my hatred of FairExposure that I will mention in my journal. But there is one glaring problem with FE that I needed to address here.

Now, every week I go out there & search all over the site (or at least a great chunk of it) to find fun, eye-popping, high-quality artwork that I can fave & then feature here so that I can share it all with you. In fact, that's how it used to work: Talented artists would work hard to create truly creative Deviations, & the best would be noticed by Deviants who appreciate & love it. And the truly dedicated would even feature it, share, suggest it for DDs, etc.

To sum it up basically, I feel that truly amazing artwork that has a lot of heart & creativity poured into it should be rewarded in one way or another.

But that's not how FairExposure works.

No, FairExposure pretty much spits in the face of everything that I believe in here. With it, any artist in a select category is automatically rewarded just for showing up, posting something, & getting a few faves or pageviews which will apparently count as at least fifty, thus automatically shooting the artist & their work right to the top of the Popular sections, regardless of talent, effort involved, & the input/opinion of the community.

And that's just wrong. In features like this, & ones by other hard-working Deviants such as `baKIN, =Hexaditidom, =kizioko, GDs such as ^archanN & ^skifi, & several others, you get exposure for being an artist who's created some stunning artwork. There, you get exposure & get called "popular" just because someone took pity on the category your placed your stuff in.

Now, arguably I've just dug my own grave here. But whether you agree with me or not, or whether you agree with FairExposure or not, just remember this: A gay little algorithm that lies about popularity is no substitute for an actual community that knows & appreciates talent.

And thus ends my little public service announcement.

...Well, I thought that went well! Now let's all go out for milkshakes after the show! Speaking of which, let's get going already...

Okay, so if you don't know by now, the featured artists here each receive the Golden Fefcaine Award:

...My little prestigious token of appreciation for anyone who created some amazing, DD-worthy artwork. Plus it has a delicious milk chocolate center! This week with two true favorites - cookie bits & nougat - thrown into the mix as well!

Alright now, on with the show! Here's this week's Mini-DDs...

Ah, *snowkatt101, do you ever run out of ideas for amazing character designs? Let's pray not, because then we wouldn't be blessed with such amazing Deviations as Pineapple plz? Val Tai is one insanely lovable character, & the amazing style, great use of perspective, sweet color scheme, & great amount of detail truly does her justice & makes for one truly wicked piece of work.

As you can clearly see, for strauss by =ScaryDeadGirl prominently features an animated cartoon glass of beer with devil horns that shoots rainbows out of its head. And just how are we supposed to find that anything but awesome? Extremely creative, fun, stylish, & lovable, this is one sweet Deviation that easily deserves a spot in your faves.

Man, I have been putting off featuring =wereRemjiff here for too long...So thank God she came across with WooDooDoll & blew my mind away to the point where I couldn't resist it. Where to begin here? The wicked creature design? The stunning lighting? The amazing variety of vivid colors? The great amount of detail right down to those little dools? Let's just say that it's all damn eye-popping & leave it at that.

Limitless by =csjwcr...Uh, wow! Damn, this one has just left me speechless. And if the innovative concept behind this doesn't do the same for you, then the cool & unique color scheme will. And if that doen't work, then the sweet eye-pleasing style will. And if that doesn't work, then the -jam-packed amount of detail will. And if that doesn't...Ah, Hell, you get the point. Just fave it already!

Mew? Meh. Celebi? Ho-hum. Jirachi? Couldn't care less. No, when it comes to amazing rare Pokemon, there can only be one: Missingno. And ~warupua puts an amazing twist on this little urban legend with Glitch... City?, a truly sweet piece of oekaki work with a sweet design, a cool background, & a perfectly twilightish color scheme. People, make sure not to miss out on this one!

Ohh, I am always a sucker for well-designed & crazed character designs, much like the one in whats this? by *Lissachoa. And of course, it doesn't hurt that the artist's style is amazing, the dark color scheme is perfect, the mood created is a bit eerie yet lovable, & a whole thing just comes together as a great mix of cartoonish & macabre elements. Definitely one not to be ignored.

~Gullacass is one of those artists with a gallery full of so many ridiculously amazing creations that it becomes near impossible to pick out just one piece of work to deem DD-worthy...But OMNOMNOM RAMEN won out, largely in part due to the cool character design, the wild & vivid colors, the creativity involved in it all, & the very impressive style. Make sure to scope out the rest of this talented artist's gallery!

HIGH TEA by *yaamas can easily be summed up in just two words: Unbelievably charming. Hell, it even comes with an equally charming poem! With a style & feeling straight out of an old storybook, coloring that complements it perfectly, & a great amount of detail, this is one truly amazing & lovable piece of work that you can't afford to miss out on.

~mathiole's gallery is chock full of amazing Deviations that just feel...Shocking. You know, in the sense that they blind you with a thousand volts of awesomeness. Take All is vanity, for example, with its experimental & cool concept, wild color scheme, sweet mix of styles, & grand amount of detail. If none of that shocks you with brilliance, then something is seriously wrong with you.

...& that's all for this week! If you have any comments, suggestions, etc., they'd be greatly appreciated! I hope you've all liked what I've featured this week, & I'll be back next week with nine more DD-worthy works of art! Sayanora until then! ^_^
