The Art of the Sketchbook

=Darkdesyre:iconDarkdesyre: reports, February 18
I have to admit that this my New Years resolution this year was to develop the discipline of carrying a sketchbook again, that intimate collection of my thoughts, ideas and inspirations. To that end I actually bought a new sketchbook and carried it around for a few weeks with my laptop before abandoning it unused beneath a stack of unread art magazines.

So to inspire me today to renew my commitment I did a search of some sketchbook pages here on DA and was incredibly impressed. I realized that it is an art form in itself.. the sketchbook page a wonderful insight into the working mind of the artist that creates and nurtures it. What a great window into the creative process, inspiration, insight and technical skill of the artist who develops it. The beauty of the simple sketchbook is it is a record of your daily life, travels, experiences, thoughts, etc. What a wonderful record of your journey as an artist.. a great place to experiment with new concepts, ideas an techniques in safety.. tucked away in your own private sketchbook.

So I have been inspired to dig out my new sketchbook from that stack of magazines and actually use those blank pages... an intimidating and daunting task... but my hope is to have an intimate dialog with myself as an artist. I hope you will be inspired by the examples that follow to develop the discipline yourself!

I *love* carrying around a small sketchbook with me everywhere. I like to have something to keep my hands busy, and the bonus is that I get a lot of practice drawing from life. But I'm sure you knew all that. *grin*

Great selection of work. Coincidentally, I've been poring over my new copy of Frank Frazetta's "Rough Work" [link] all day, so your article really struck a chord. Seeing how a master keeps it loose & creative is always inspirational. Time to sketch more!

That was my intent in starting to carry one around with me again... but the intent was much stronger then the actual practice! My sketch book is still blank after carrying it around for 3 weeks sigh! Its so hard to start a new one!
