The Great Tutorial Adventure Vol. 2

`GH-MoNGo:iconGH-MoNGo: reports, February 21
Welcome to the second installment of The Great Tutorial Adventure, where in this News feature, I'll be covering the topic of acrylic painting.

Acrylics are very versatile medium. They can be thinned to the consistency of watercolours, or applied in thick impasto like oil paint. Acrylics can also be used as airbrush colours, fabric paints, and a binder for collage. Acrylic paints are water-soluble, so they have numerous possibilities for usage in mixed media techniques.

Acrylic paints dry very quickly, although there are a number of ways to get around the issue of paint drying on the palette. One approach is to construct a humectant palette, such as the one demonstrated in *No-Sign-of-Sanity's tutorial:

Since the paint dries so quickly, care needs to be taken to make sure that brushes are clean and that the paint doesn't dry in the brush hairs. Acrylic paints have a notorious reputation for ruining brushes.

The techniques for acrylic painting are almost too numerous to list, but the wide variety of effects are astounding. Acrylics really open themselves up to experimentation. So without further blabbing, here are a few especially helpful walkthroughs and demonstrations on acrylic painting.

VERY very helpful! Acrylics are one of my favorite mediums, when I'm given a chance to play with them BESIDES with my custom ponies.

I found an extender a while back, made by either Plaid or Folkart or Apple Barrel ( hey, I like my "cheapo" acrylics XP ) that's great for extending the life of your acrylics while they're still in your working palette. I did notice, however, it dooooes tend to make the paint a tad, I want to say, rubbery, once it's fully dry, but it doesn't affect the quality of the finished piece. It's really only noticable in your palette ( I let all of the paint in my palette dry fully before cleaning it when I'm finished, as the paint likes clogging up my sink... a lot. I now have to keep industrial strength Draino next to my sink. ^^; ).
