The Campus Violence Poster Project
The shootings on the campuses of Northern Illinois University and Louisiana Technical College this past week and the tragedy at Virginia Tech University last April have brought a shocking reminder of how an ordinary, daily event can turn into tragedy.
This tragedy illuminates, however, the generous human impulse to want to help those who have suffered loss.
In response to this tragedy, The University & College Designers Association is orchestrating a poster project.
UCDA is asking members and designers to design a poster that reflects some aspect of campus violence-the shock of the event itself, the heroism of the survivors, or the importance of crisis preparedness.
This summer, UCDA's Designer magazine will feature the posters, and include them on the UCDA website for viewing.
Each one-of-a-kind poster will also be on sale through an online auction.
HOW TO ENTER The STEP Best of Web Design 2008 competition is accepting entries until April 1, 2008.
Published bi-monthly, STEP inside design magazine serves a creative audience of graphic designers at advertising agencies, design firms, and corporate design departments. According to STEP editor Tom Biederbeck, "Because it's Web-specific, and because we create an article explaining why each winner is so noteworthy, STEP's Best of Web is the preferred competition for online designers who want their work shown in the best possible light, as well as for those who want to learn about groundbreaking work being done on the Web."
Entries can be submitted for Entire Website, Advertising (Web banners, pop-ups, etc.) or Motion Graphics works in the Consumer, Business, Self-Promotion, Nonprofit/Public Service or Miscellaneous categories, with the requirement that submissions have appeared live online for the first time between April 1, 2007 and April 1, 2008, the cutoff date for entries. All winners will be interviewed and featured in STEP's September/October 2008 Best of Web Annual, the only design annual of its kind.
More information and a submission form is available on the
STEP inside design magazine site. Lemon Poppy Seed: Multitasking Creativity
The job description of graphic designers has changed. Classical graphic design
is now being influenced by various design principles from the areas of typography,
illustration, art and installation.
Exciting work is currently being produced that is not necessarily created by
graphic designers, but by independent spirits who work in interdisciplinary
ways with a variety of skills. This new generation of talent is developing a visual
vocabulary that is refreshingly off-key and inventing their own original design
language.
Lemon Poppy Seed is a compilation of work by these young, international artists.
Their styles defy current trends and classifications and are all the more brilliant
for doing so.
