[Flu] Hallowe'en Poetry Competition (9)

So instead of something trite and drearily obvious and orange hallowe'eny style - my contest for this month is about All Saints, and All Souls day...

I want you to write about death, and the dead. It can tie into hallowe'en as much or as little as you like but I'll warn you I am looking for some genuine and honest emotion here, Hallowe'en is a holiday - not an emotion, and it has been done.

Collaboration Contest: Part I

=ian-x:iconian-x: reports, February 22
CONTEST: Create a work based on my photos

PRIZE: A print of the artwork you create

I have decided to run a combination collaboration exercise and contest, to inspire myself and others to create some new art, and to broaden my horizons. The idea is really kind of simple-- I am going to open up some of my art to be used as stock/reference to specific artists, to create collaborative works.

This is open to pretty much anyone who can think of a way to create artwork based on existing photographs, with the shared basis being photographs from my gallery here. I'd love to see paintings based on my photos, tattoos of them, 3D renders utilizing them, photomanipulations incorporating them, or anything else you can come up with.

However, I'm not a stock artist, and my works aren't generally available for modification. So this contest will come in two parts, the first being a sort of qualifying stage where the prize is a attribution derivative works license to use one of my photos, and the second being a contest among the winners.

Here's how it works...

STEP 1: Qualifying Round

This part is really easy. Just comment here, or send me a note, telling me which medium you would like to incorporate one (or more) of my photos into, and where I can see other works by you in that medium. If I like the idea of seeing you create a symbiote of our creations, then you're in.

STEP 2: Create works

This part is easy to describe, but where all the real work is. Let me know which photo(s) from my gallery you want to work with. I will give you permission to use them to create derivative works, asking only for attribution anywhere you show/publish/share them and permission back to display your works in my own portfolio.

STEP 3: Final Results

This part will be the hard part for me. I'll have to go through the resulting works and decide which one is my favorite. I will post all of the best entries, close runners-up, and the winner in another post, and of course pimp them in my profile.

The winner will receive a print of the combined work. (I'll add it as a print to my account, you wishlist it, I'll order it for you at artist's cost, you get a cool thing in the mail.)

FINAL NOTE: Since this is my first contest, I reserve the right to pull the prize if (and only if) the turnout it too small to make judging interesting.

You may notice that there are no deadlines listed in this contest.

The intention is for it to run long enough to have enough people entering. Once I have a significant group through the "qualifying round" I will do another announcement giving a deadline a little ways out to qualify, and a firm date to finish pieces by.

What I'd like to do to your photo "Lollipop" is photo shop it thru some color changes--probably just brighten it a bit unnaturally until it glows and shifts a bit (see my photos of Phi Phi Island and Lonely Coastlines) and then print it to shade and emphasize parts of the model (and picture) using Prisma pencils, water colors, prisma chalk and India ink. The shading and highlighting will be very bright and vibrant! The end would be a very funky, electric look that would bring your delicious picture to another level of delight!. :D

I'm not too familiar with the Magic Eye. Can you explain the artistic process, and how a 2D image can be incorporated?

Maybe parts of it. I could probably upload something I have done that is similar to this process. But, I don't know how to "link". If you explain it to me, I'm sure I could do it easily.

the hardest part is actually done by a secondary program or plugin for a graphic program. because it is a long logerithm thing(alot of math). i use 3-d maker. but the "hidden" image starts as a greyscale "depthmap" where white is close and black is far, shades of grey in between. i use blender to make my depthmaps and by using blender i can do a 3-d of a 2-d image then make the depthmap from that. but there is also the texture, the visible part. that is a repeating pattern that is adjusted by the program to hold the parts of the hidden image within the pattern. the texture can be any 2-d image. from speckles to static like on a tv to a face shot of one of your lovely models. the 3-d conversion part usually works best with a front and side shot of the same object in the same position but i can usually make it work without the side shot.
