Ok, so that you all don't think that we have died and are wasting away somewhere in an art ghetto, here is a tidbit for you all to mull over. I recently (this evening ;) ) went to the Fractal area of the Print Shop to browse around a bit, and here is what I wrote in my journal regarding my visit:

"I want to draw your attention to the Fractal area of the dA print shop. This is one way that all of you new and senior fractalists alike can get a good glimpse at what is popular and selling; if that is something you are interested in. I decided to go myself, and take a gander at what has been popular in the fractal area of the print shop, mostly to determine if it appeared that I could have what it takes to maybe and eventually sell some of my pieces here on deviantART. To my amazement, and sure enough, I do have quite a few pieces that quite possibly could fetch me some cold hard cash one of these days, not only of my fractals but of my photography as well. As you can imagine, this was very gratifying to know; that as an artist that usually does this for the pure enjoyment generally speaking, has since decided that this could be worth something in the long run, mind you not the quick and instant cash cow, but a good way to get that extra lift every once in a while *smile*. So, if you too would like an opportunity to go browse through the Fractal Art area of the Print Shop, here is the link: [link]"

I hope you all will drop by the Fractal area of the Print Shop and take a look around. I know I had some fun and was quite amazed at the beauty and also how my own skills matched some of the artists already doin well in the Print Shop. Good luck and happy browsing!!

I'd like to know how their "best selling" algorithm works. Because frankly, one of my fractals is on the front page of the "best selling" fractals page, and.....I've only sold two of that fractal. Almost everything that's on that page is also on the "all time most popular fractals" page, including said piece of mine. Yup, folks, my most popular, most favorited fractal has netted me about five bucks. On the other hand, the fractal I've sold the most of (and profited the most from) shows up six pages in, after 8 of my other fractals that I've sold zero of. Looks to me like "best selling" is a euphemism for "most popular in a different way than the all time most popular deviations". Whatever that is.

Ah, all cleared up. $spinegrinder says: "Best Sellers works in two ways: When browsing the 'Best Sellers' are as linked on the shop front, or generally browsing by 'Featured', everything's sorted by true best sellers, as in, number of sales. When browsing 'All Products' though, 'Best Sellers' sort by a Favorites/Wishlist metric...we are doing it that way to prevent redundancy, since the actual Best Sellers page already filters all products and sorts by sales."

Works for me!

Thanks for the advice. I also have some of my fractals for sale as prints. I have sold exactly 0 of them. And some of my work is actually pretty good (IMHO). That doesn't really bother me, though. I use DA to help develop my skills as an artist, be inspired by my peers, etc. I haven't found DA to be an effective marketing tool to sell fractal prints. Most of the people (I think) viewing the fractal galleries are other fractal artists. My guess is that fractal artists may not be inclined to buy others fractal work, but rather display their own work in their homes.

So, how should a fractal artist market themselves? I'm by no means an expert on this (far from it) and would like to know some tips in this area. What works. What doesn't work.

:ahoy:

I don't think the Prints section for Fractal Art is very accurate at all. Looking at the page, I count only one page of fractal prints, showing only 86 fractals. Clearly there has to be something wrong with that page, right? It doesn't make any sense. :hmm:

people that many great fractals are indeed,

It's totally wrong because I've made all of my fractal uploads here (over 300) into prints - only one of which is showing on the page - and I've posted four or five fractal calendars as well.

I've only sold three prints and they were all to myself to give as gifts to my husband and my mom so I don't think that counts.

Honestly, I think one has to look at "how" those certain fractals are best-sellers, because networking/advertising is a key element. Tom has been featured many times and is without a doubt one of the most well-known fractalists by those outside of the community. The same can be said for Nicholas and Jacob, granted, all three of these artists produce great works of art and offer high-resolution, high-quality prints, so quality and satisfaction is guaranteed.

I'm sure there are some artists in the fractal community that, given the networking capabilities of the previous stated, could easily sell prints. Of course, fractals are hardly a hot commodity.

 I haven't sold a single print on dA. I just got a third DD and I'd say my work is pretty consistently popular and of fairly high quality, humility aside. Personally, I rely on other non-commercial feedback to gauge how I'm doing. Maybe I'm doing something completely wrong in my approach to prints here, but I don't think any fractal artist is raking in heaps of cash. :hmm: To be honest I really haven't done a whole lot of self promotion, so the fault is probably mine. :D

BTW, if anybody wants any prints... :giggle: Seriously, I actually just put a few up.
