"Google Wave is a new tool for communication and collaboration on the web, coming later this year."

It takes email and IM, and turns it into the sort of communication tools we've become used to on deviantart, and way more. The video demonstration (found at the end of the post) is nearly an hour and a half long, but it'll blow your mind.

Do The Windows Wubi Wubi Woo

Most of you Windows Users out there have heard of Linux, have heard how great it is, are glad you don't have to spend tons of money on a MAC to be rid of the Microsoft Plagues -- BUT -- you have some natural apprehension towards Linux, as well as some valid questions about it. Well, lucky for you that all of the stigma behind its supposed "over complexness" is pure myth. This comes from a time many, many years ago when it was more complex and no one was familiar with it. But that was then and this is now.

Microsoft Windows Server 2008 is Here!

=ppgrainbow:iconppgrainbow: reports, February 26, 2008
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 has been released worldwide to business customers. Windows Server 2008 is the successor to Windows Server 2003 (NT 5.2) that was released almost five years ago. Like Windows Vista (released over a year ago), the new server-based operating system is built on the Windows NT 6 kernel and it is a significant improvement over its predecessor.

Here's a complete rundown on Microsoft Windows Server 2008:

:bulletred: Main Features :bulletred:

Windows Server 2008 shares much of the same architecture and functionality since it's built from the same codebase as Windows Vista. The latest server OS comes with most of the technical, security, management and administrative features new to Windows Vista as covered in the previous article on Windows Vista plus with new features such as the self-healing NTFS file system, Windows Hardware Error Architecture (WHEA) and the PowerShell.

:bulletblue: The self-heading NTFS file system features a NTFS worker thread that will spawn in the background and perform a localised fix-up of damaged data structures and instead of locking out the entire volume and needing to take the server down, it only leaves corrupted files and folders unavailable.

If previous versions of Windows (dating all the way back to Windows NT 3.51), if the OS detected corruption in the file system of a NTFS volume, it would be marked as "dirty" and in order to correct the errors on the volume, it had to be taken offline.

:bulletblue: The Windows Hardware Error Architecture (WHEA), first introduced in Windows Vista and as a add-on in Windows Server 2003, it extends the hardware error reporting mechanism of previous versions of Windows and brings the mechanisms together as components of a coherent hardware error infrastructure. With today's hardware devices and a more closer integration of system firmware, WHEA takes advantage of the additional hardware error information available.

:bulletblue: The Windows PowerShell, first released on 14 November 2006, it is a extensible command line interface shell and associated scripting lanaguage. As it is integrated with the .NET Framework, it provides and enviroment to perform administrative tasks by execution of cmdlets (commandlets). There are more than 130 standard command line tools consistent syntax and utilities available for IT professionals to more easily control system administration and accelerate automation.

Windows PowerShell is available in 32-bit, 64-bit and Itanium versions and it also works on Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows Server 2003 and all versions of Windows Vista.

The rest of the latest features for Windows Server 2008 can be found in this Wikipedia article.

:bulletred: Pricing and Availability of Windows Server 2008 Editions :bulletred:

Pricing for all five versions of Windows Server 2008 were announced on 12 November 2007. It will be made available through retail/OEM channels and will ship in all nine editions. Windows Server 2008 will be available in 32-bit, 64-bit and Itanium editions.

:bulletblue: Windows Web Server 2008 - $469.
:bulletblue: Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition - $999 with five client access licenses.
:bulletblue: Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Edition - $2,999 per processor.
:bulletblue: Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition - $3,999 per processor.
:bulletblue: Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based Systems - $2,999 per processor.

All editions of Windows Server 2008 without Hyper-V technology will cost $28 less per processor. Visit this page here for a complete overview of editions for Windows Server 2008.

:bulletred: Hardware Requirements :bulletred:

To run Windows Server 2008, you will need the following:

:bulletblue: 1 GHz 32-bit processor or a 1.4 GHz 64-bit processor. For Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based Systems, you need a Intel Itanium 2 processor. A 2 GHz processor is recommended. Windows Server 2008 will support up to 64 processors.
:bulletblue: 512 MB of memory, 2 GB is recommended. The maximum memory that a 32-bit Standard Edition can handle is 4 GB and up to 64 GB for Datacenter and Enterprise editions. 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition can support up to 32 GB and as much as 2 TB for Enterprise, Datacenter and Itanium-bases Systems.
:bulletblue: 10 GB of disk space is required and 40 GB of disk space is recommended for better performance. Computers that have 16 GB or more memory will require more disk space for paging, hibernation and dump files.
:bulletblue: A DVD-ROM drive.
:bulletblue: A super VGA or higher-resolution monitor capable of displaying at least 800 x 600 pixels, a keyboard and a Microsoft-compatible pointing device.

:bulletred: Lifecycle Support Policy :bulletred:

Mainstream support for Windows Server 2008 and its family of products will end on 9 July 2013 and extended support will conclude on 10 July 2018.

As for Windows Server 2003, its predecessor, mainstream support will end two years after the sucessor is release in which it will be 13 July 2010. Extended support ends five years after the end of mainstream support in which it will be 14 July 2015.

:bulletred: The Last 32-bit Server Operating System :bulletred:

Just like Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition, the last ever MS-DOS based version of Windows, the software giant has made it clear that Windows Server 2008 will be the last 32-bit server operating system.

The big finale will be the Release 2 (R2) update in 2009 and that will be it. Additionally, after Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, there will be no more versions of Windows - either on desktop or server that will work on a 32-bit CPU such as the Pentium III, Pentium IV or Core Duo.

All successors to Windows Server 2008 will be 64-bit only.

:bulletred: Questions and Comments :bulletred:

Should you have any concerns or questions in regards to the release of Microsoft Windows Server 2008, you are welcomed to post your thoughts.

Just tell me what they mean by "server" XP

--
The biggest fear of an artist is an empty sheet of paper.
=ppgrainbow:iconppgrainbow: Feb 29, 2008, 4:03:36 PM
When they mean by "server", they mean by a individual computer on a local area network (LAN) and acting as a service or resource provider to client computers that share the resources within the network infrastructure.

That's all.
