Photojournalism: An Ethical Approach

^Helewidis:iconHelewidis: reports, January 10
If you click the link (title) you'll be directed to an online edition of a book originally published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Publishers, Hillsdale, New Jersey, 1991: Photojournalism An Ethical Approach by Paul Martin Lester.

I consider it food for thought and reflection about photojournalism and ethics and thus would like to share it with you.

Now follows an excerpt to lure you into reading the full version:

A photojournalist is a mixture of a cool, detached professional and a sensitive, involved citizen. The taking of pictures is much more than F-stops and shutter speeds. The printing of pictures is much more than chemical temperatures and contrast grades. The publishing of pictures is much more than cropping and size decisions. A photojournalist must always be aware that the technical aspects of the photographic process are not the primary concerns.

A mother crying over the death of her daughter is not simply an image to be focused, a print to be made, and a picture to be published. The mother's grief is a lesson in humanity.

If the photojournalist produces a picture without a thought for her tragedy, the lesson is lost. But if the photographer cares for her loss, is made more humane, and causes the readers to share in her grief, photojournalism has reached its highest potential.

Despite its frustrations and low moments, the lesson of humanity is why photojournalism is an extremely rewarding profession. For that reason, photojournalism is worthy of the best thought and actions possible by its participants.

The Untitled Saga of Hana

=fearsomefaerie:iconfearsomefaerie: reports, March 1, 2008
What do dandruff, lobsters, talking cats, and kidnapping have to do with each other? They’re all in Josh Tierney’s The Untitled Saga of Hana.

Hana is a girl who has a problem. She has dandruff. make things out of her dandruff. Things that work. Along with her friends, James and Henri, Hana meets some colorful, and sometimes down right weird characters throughout her most epic saga.

The Untitled Saga of Hana is delightfully funny and a jolly good read. Mr. Tierney’s whimsical writing style makes one subject to giggle-fits and some squishy-melti-ness. It also is an excellent book to do a book report on. :D

The book itself is full of awesome too.

The cover illustration is by Afu Chan, the book is designed by Joel Hentges and the inside illustrations are by yours truly.

You can get a copy for yourself at Josh's store, or you can read it online for free, along with Mr. Tierney’s other stories, at JoshTierney.com.

(But it is so much fun having your own personal copy, eh? :hint hint: ;D)

It's disappointing seeing the first comment be so negative. He totally misses the point. The collaboration was generated through an exchange at DA. It should be a celebration of what a community like DA can do.

umm, yeah. Why does the first guy that commented have to be like that? It was a great collaboration, it really was. Your illustrations and Mr. Tierney's writing fit together perfectly.
~iheartjoan:iconiheartjoan: Mar 1, 2008, 5:43:45 PM
Your illustrations are beautiful, and without self-promotion I'm pretty sure that most people would be jobless and bitter. Plus self promotion can often lead to amazing works of art and creativity.

Self promotion is not bad. There is nothing wrong with it.

In this case, I was not promoting myself but Mr. Tierney's book.
