PARIS (AFP) - Calls to end forced marriage, domestic abuse and job discrimination marked International Women's Day on Saturday as demonstrators took to the streets worldwide.

The issues highlighted crossed a wide spectrum, including abortion rights in Italy, violence against women in Iraq and women hostages in Colombia.

Nearly 100 years old, the day marks the worldwide struggle for equal rights for half the globe's population.

MOSCOW, March 8 (Itar-Tass) - Russian women are celebrating the International Women’s Day countrywide from a small village to a big city.

Russia’s only marriage museum in St Petersburg brought its exposition to Moscow to show marriage certificates, family relics, wedding dresses and accessories of the 19th-20th centuries.

“Our museum tells about love and true value of human relations, and age-old family traditions,” the museum’s director, Olga Morozova, who had been collecting this exposition for 20 yeas, said.

EDITORIAL - 03/08/2008

It is no surprise that International Women’s Day has its roots in struggles for workers’ rights in the United States. In the early 1900’s, women workers, many of them immigrants, toiled under grueling conditions in factories here. They clamored and organized for just treatment, and in doing so, shaped labor movements.

The annual celebration, introduced as a socialist tribute to women workers, recognizes that women are entitled to respect, dignity and human rights in all facets of life, everywhere. Today, we honor women who have asserted those truths.

It is the courage of women, propelled by real life conditions, that has brought issues of oppression to the forefront. Whether it has been Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo challenging the "Dirty War", brides marching to protest domestic violence, or a mother taking up sanctuary in a church to remain united with her child, these and countless other acts have increased awareness about the right to justice.

TORONTO - Thousands in cities across the country are expected to mark the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day with parades, rallies and other events.

While some are celebrating the achievements of women over the past century, many say gender equality in Canada is still a long way off.

Helen Chilas, co-ordinator for the Canadian Voice of Women For Peace, says violence against women is still rife across the country.

And childcare worker Rochelle Dobas says women still make about 30 cents per dollar less than their male counterparts.

International Women's Day has been marked from Australia to Afghanistan, with pleas for greater rights and equality for half the region's population.

Events were also held in Pakistan, India, Indonesia and China as activists pressed for an end to discrimination ranging from abortion of female foetuses to workplace bias.

The Minister for Status of Women, Tanya Plibersek, says the occasion is a chance to acknowledge issues of continuing concern such as women's lack of economic security and financial independence.

"From the moment a woman enters the work force she is likely to earn less than her male colleagues, regardless of her career, industry or level," she said.

Women gathered at Kabul's American University to highlight issues affecting them, organisers said. Another event was planned in Panjshir province, north of the capital.

The issue has special resonance in Afghanistan, whose former Taliban government was notorious for stopping women from working or going to school and forcing them to wear the all-covering burka.

This is nice because it shows how the need for equality has not been met. Many argue that the feminist movement is over. Instead, we should focus on the areas that it is still needed and applaud it's accomplishments.
