`GeneratingHype on letters, editing and GDship

^lovetodeviate:iconlovetodeviate: reports, August 30
An interview with ex-GD, writer, editor, fascinating person: `GeneratingHype. Here are some tidbits from the interview (which I recommend reading in full):

"Letters presuppose a sort of authenticity, and I truly believe that a story—no matter the form—needs to be authentic and believable.

"Sometimes I wish I had stories such as "I wrote my first published poem at three and a half!" or "I started writing stories at two!", but writing never came easy for me and is still not very easy for me.

The Use of Adverbs in Fiction Writing

=DarcKnyt:iconDarcKnyt: reports, August 29
Adverbs are the endangered species of the adult fiction world. They're frowned on like putting a Baby Ruth bar in a punch bowl at a wedding reception -- not a good idea. They're also indicative of weak writing ... but why? This article covers why adverbs are evil and what you can do to avoid using them.

Simply Prose: A New Prose Community

*simplyprose:iconsimplyprose: reports, March 10
What is simplyprose?

*simplyprose is a new prose community on that aims to provide a place on DA where prose writers can feature their prose pieces without a selection process. In other words, *simplyprose provides a platform for exposure for writers of prose. Simply note us your pieces and we will feature them.

But there's a catch! *simplyprose is not merely a place for people to showcase their work. One of our goals is to generate new prose pieces on DA. For this reason, *simplyprose will only feature prose pieces that have been written for prompts that *simplyprose has provided. These prompts will hopefully also serve as points of inspiration for those who want to write but just do not have the inspiration.

*simplyprose also has plans for exciting projects and competitions to come in the future!

How does it work?

Every month, a new journal entry will be put up with the month's prompts. There will be four types of prompts: a scenario-type prompt, a character-type prompt, a word association prompt, and a miscellaneous-category prompt. For more details, please read our introductory journal.

As people note us with their pieces, they will be featured in weekly-updated journals. At the end of the month, all the submitted pieces will be combined into a single deviation.

What kinds of prose pieces can I send in to be featured?

All kinds! *simplyprose welcomes all prose pieces except for fanfiction. We do not feature fanfiction because we feel that while fanfiction can be useful, original writing needs more much more encouragement and exposure on DA.

How do I send work in to be featured?

Easy!

Just send a note to us with a link to the work that you want to be featured, with the prompt category, title, and approximate word count (just for categorizing reasons).

If you send in multiple pieces, please be sure to label the links clearly.

That sounds great! When can I start?

The first set of March prompts has already been posted!

They are as follows:

Scenario Prompt:
Responses to this prompt must include this scenario in their work in any way they want:

A couple brings their young children to a cabin by the lake during the summer holidays. Unfortunately, one of the children disappears mysteriously.

Character Prompt:
Write a story around a character that you create. This character must have/be: a twin, in love, obsessive.

Word Association Prompt:
Responses to this prompt must involve all three of the following words in some way:

Rain. Orange. Chapels.

This Month's Miscellaneous Prompt:
Theme prompt: Immortality

These prompts are also on our journal here: [link]

How can I help out?

We would love help running the community! If you would like to get involved, please send a note in and we'll go from there!

Since we're a brand-spanking new community, if would be great if you could help us spread the word! Watch us, put us in your signature, feature us in your journal – anything! We’d love to get as many people on board as we can!

How do I join?

*simplyprose isn’t a usual club in that you have to be active or risk facing removal from the memberlist; we simply aim to be a resource and a gathering place for prose writers. Just add us to your watch for the monthly and weekly updates, and participate! While you don’t have critique quotas to fulfill, we do strongly encourage participating writers to critique fellow writers’ works.

We look forward to seeing your works!

This is such a weird coincidence. I was just planning a story about an obsessive twin who's in love. Unfortunately - and I've been getting a lot of this lately - I can't post it yet because it's a coursework assignment, and if it's found on the internet I'll be in big trouble (I could explain, but to be honest I'd rather save myself the bother).

That is a strange coincidence! You can always submit after it won't be an issue -- we do accept and feature pieces that were written for older prompts (we don't believe in limitations very much, obviously =) ).
