Equipment And Art

=Goodfoot42:iconGoodfoot42: reports, March 11, 2008
So how much emphasis on equipment dictates the quality of the art?

I say this because I shoot with a Canon Powershot S5 1S. Granted it is a higher end Powershot and I can do everything with it that people do with their higher end cameras with all of the bells and whistles except for shooting RAW files and interchange the lenses. I always shoot in the manual modes as well. Trust me there is nothing I would like more than to shoot with a 30D and a Sigma 10-20 but for now I am playing the hand I was dealt because honestly I just can't afford to purchase a pro model.

I believe that while equipment plays a major role in the outcome of the final image, you absolutely must have an eye and an instinct for photography to be effective. I also believe that understanding the technical aspects of photography and capturing light are essential and that there are certain aspects that can't be effectively taught or learned. Finding creative lines, angles and pleasing compositions are instinctual in my opinion. This is where ones individual style comes in.

I'm sure that there are some elitists out there that won't even look at my work because it wasn't shot with a $3000 - $5000 package. I'm still trying to figure out if that bothers me or not. I don't think it does though. This is why I do not strip my images of the valuable meta data. When I find a great photo on DA that sparks my interest, the first thing I do is try to get into the photographers head as to how he or she shot that wonderful composition. Where do I look? The metadata section. It really bothers me when it isn't present. Granted, when I shoot my HDR shots I shoot 3 different exposures and the metadata will not show the shutter speed but it will show the ISO, F number, and the focal length. It also shows the model of the camera.

When I first started photography again and joined DA 3 months ago I briefly thought about stripping the meta data just for the sheer thought of the haters that saw that it was shot with a Powershot. I say F - em. Look what I can do with my Powershot!

Someday if I feel that I am too limited by my equipment I may upgrade to a higher end package but for now it suits me just fine.

Opinions? I would like to hear them.

On a side note, check out these great galleries!

You have been doing a wonderful work. F@ck elitists! I have seen amazing photographs with powershots and really crappy ones with EOS 5Ds. I agree with your position. So keep the EXIF and let them eat their envy hearts out.
I must say, however, that when you go SLR, you will see that its potential will lead to a difference in your photography, in what comes to broadening up the range of processing and of course, capturing! RAW definitely changed my style.
When I look at your photos I don't care what camera was used, I just care about the impact one shot has on my brain, heart, or view of the world.

Keep up the wonderful work! And thank you again for your support. It's most valuable, Giant!

i agree. it is really all about the creative eye. wheather it's a pricey camera or a simple, cheap fully automatic camera, the photo will be better when a creative person takes it. Goodfoot42 is a great, shining example of a creative eye. i have seen his gallery, and have even had the pleasure to shoot with him, and he can capture a moment, or an angle soo well that you would never realize they were taken with a powershot. no matter what you shoot with, go out there and just have fun and try your best to challenge yourself to become better. if all the talent on this website can't inspire you to do better, then nothing will.

Good photography doesn't require high-end equipment. But.

But let's look it at this way: A good photographer Ken (imaginary character) with real talent and keen eye takes excellent shots with his point-and-shoot-pocket-camera. He masters his tool and knows it's weaknesses and strengthes.

But then someone gives him a real DSLR-body with nice choise of lenses and filters and stuff. Given time to learn his new toys his photos will be better in technical quality (which is quite important part of digital photographing). It is sad, but true.

Good photography doesn't require high-end equipment, but it will help.

I couldnt agree more with you! Having greater equipment allows for a higher range of what you can do, but really it's the ability of the artist that is what really counts

And I too like the meta files

I had this discussion somewhere on da the other day it seems. How I really don't think it really has to do with the quality of your equipment. It's more or less how you use it and how good your eye is at spotting a great photo. I used a Nikon CoolPix L6 for a long time and got some amazing shots out of it. I mean it's a simple point and shoot. I just try to capture a moment with the best of my ability.

ey, i just bought that canon cause in my country isn't easy to find a good camera on that price. I mainly will use it for animation and to practice photography .
Shooting with the best quality and avoiding the professional sayings ( whattt??? it doesn't shoot raw???!!!)in a horrorified look :)is the best way, i don't see the big difference with semi-pro cameras in the market.

For animation has all the pro's and almost no disadvantages. Has manual focus easy to find, comes with a software ready-to -use for controlling the shot in the computer , high quality video setting, great tele and macro settings, a great sound quality to record sound-only, or to add sound notes to frames, etc.

When you need raw, there's:

i didn't do he firmware change, but if i really need for that in the future, i'll give it a try :)
