Watermarks - Are they necessary?

~wedealindreams:iconwedealindreams: reports, March 11
I've recently posted a journal entry telling my watchers that I'm removing all of my watermarks on my photo's. I was using deviantART's watermarks and I kept looking through my photo knowing that they just didn't look as good and after having several replied on different opinion I decided to get the opinion of all of deviantART.

so my question is how does someone approach watermarks?

- should you never use watermarks as they devalue the image and make it less appealing.

- use a water mark which doesn't actually cover the image so perhaps a signature or border with signature.

- use a watermark which covers most of the image so that it will stop people stealing photo's or using them without permission.

replied will be well appreciated...
i will read all comments and reply as I'm genuinely interested

They tend to ruin the motive I think...

Pictures freezes the time so the next generation can see what it was like before them, so go out, capture the moment and create history!

It's a bit of a dilemma, really. I do agree that an obtrusive watermark mars the image. But if you're somebody whose work is a likely target for theft, and that matters to you, an obtrusive watermark is the easiest option. One in the corner can be cropped out. Separate copyright notices are easily ignored.

Some compromises I've seen:
More subtle watermarking (a faint x across the image with your copyright notice in the center, for example); has some of the problems as the big obtrusive one, but it's not as obtrusive.

Sneaky signature... working your signature or copyright into the image somehow. More difficult (and often unfeasible) with photography, of course. And it won't prevent theft... it'll just give you some leverage when it happens to say "Yeah, see that? That proves it's mine."

I only use deviantart's watermark on the fullview option. So people can view a small preview of how my photos really look. In this community as in others all over the net your art can be stolen with just a click, so you have to protect yourself

I personally hate the deviantART default watermark. It is too big, too obtrusive and it really ruins the picture. There are only a couple dA-watermarked pictures in my favs, I just feel I can't honestly see the picture behind it. And it looks ugly anyway.

But I do understand the reason for using watermarks, it is vital for people who are making their living out their art. But even then I don't approve the default one. The ones artist have made themselves are usually much much better, and I don't have problem with them.

Personally I don't use any because photographing is just a hobby to me, so occasional art theft is therefore meaningless to me.

you know i agree. for me i dont have lot of watchers and i dont do prints so i spose it isnt as important yet for me.
but i cn understand that people who have 1000's of visitors daily and are selling prints like hot cakes would want protection from someone trying to do the same with their work

what about a policy where deviant art disable the right click?
well where u can choice wether to download. so if u choice for it not to be downloaded the right click is disabled
