Stop animal cruelty as "art" in Honduras Biennial!

~faerywitch:iconfaerywitch: reports, March 15, 2008
A certain 'modern artist' has tied a dog and left him to die of starvation surrounded by food placed as text in the walls. He calls this art, and you can read about it here in Nico1's :iconnico1: journal:
[link]

now, not happy with this, the atrocity is that he was invited to take part of the 2008 Latinamerican Art Biennial in Honduras to repeat the same.
As an artist I cannot understand why anyone would call this art and it infuriates me to levels that I can barely explain. As a Latin American person it ashames me tremendously that any other Latinamerican country would allow this to happen again, while everybody else just stares at the poor animal suffering a long, painful death.
There is a petition to be signed here: [link] it is in Spanish, but it is legit, so don't worry if you don't understand it. If you are still worried about it, let me know and I'll translate it for you.

We are artists, we cannot agree with this being called art! we need to do something about it!

Now I think something else has to be done and that I why I went to the Hondura's Government webpage and found these mails to contact the Culture department:

Gabriela Carías

Tel 235-7228
gabicarias@yahoo.com

Wilfredo Banegas Deleón
Encargado de Informatica
Tel. 235-4700 ext. 123
banegasdeleon@gmail.com

I also wrote a letter, sending it to the first contact (it seemed the best option) and I will repost the letter so you can take it and send it again. I think it is important that you state what country you are from so they see that the whole world is against this.

TU PAIS AQUI

English:
To Culture Secretary of Honduras,
Mr. Eucebio Salvador Suazo,

I write you in order to express my unconformity about the participation of Guillermo Vargas Habacuc in the Bienal de Arte Contemporáneo 2008 to be held in Honduras next September. I am sure you are already familiar with the nature of the exhibit that mentioned artist is planning to present, including the display of a dog starving to death.
As (INSERT YOUR COUNTRY HERE) citizen I cannnot but wonder if this is the image that your country wants to convey about Latin American countries, barbaric people that can stare at an animal dying slowly and painfully, taking no action, glorifying cruelty as an artistic expression.
As an artist I cannot but feel repulsion before this being called 'contemporary art'. By no means the display of unnecessary suffering of a living being can be considered art.
Mister Culture Secretary, I beg you to take part in this and avoid this deplorable display to take part in your country.

YOUR NAME HERE

Please, spread the word, we can stop this!

Basically someone can put a show on a table and call it art, there are so many ways of doing conceptual art, so my point is... Why the hell did he have to do it this way???
That's so cruel, mean and terrible... I'm with you Coty.

Diego, his point was that people is hypocritical and while they would ignore the dog in the street, it becomes center of attention in the art exhibit, but no one would help (which infuriates me even more). Still, what he did was cruel.
Oh! And for those that think this is a hoax, there are news articles about it, check on the newspapers La Prensa and La Nacion

I'm not really fond about dog i admit, but nonetheless I won't torture them "for art" that's appaling and disgusting! Will this ,so called, "modern-artist" be happy when suffered the same treatment than this poor dog? Someone should give him a taste of his own medecine and let him starve to death surrounded buy food...

$realitysquared - Just because it's on the internet doesn't mean it's free for the taking people
~tene666:icontene666: Mar 16, 2008, 5:40:36 AM
The truth is one likes to show one cares about things. It comes quite easily when those things are in a safe distance to watch and not get oneself hands dirty. Clicking anywhere to show your support doesn't really change anything and yet one thinks relieved for showing care and support.

Just how many of those devoted supporters to official statements from the gallery and the artist that the dog was fed during the time of exhibition and that he escaped - not died at the exhibition. If you have proofs (like the statement from local police) I'm wrong, correct me please.

Just please - look in the mirror before you start judging people. And start repairing the world from yourself and your surrounding, not from showing care and support for tragedies on the other end of the world...

In all honesty, dear, you don't even know me and you have no idea what I do in my every day life. You don't know about my daily activities and if I'm a satanist or a nun that helps in charities, so please, refrain from making comments like this. Many of the people that has commented here is very caring and actively doing good things to change the world.
I am not basing my assumptions in journals and blogs, but in news articles from Costa Rica and Honduras.
I would say you are the first one that should think twice before judging.
