porn or art??? please vote!

=SquidWish:iconSquidWish: reports, March 16
In a nutshell:

Should I create an 'is it porn or art?' DA page?

I think its very unfair that a beautiful piece of art gets falsely labeled as pornography and removed from the art community as a direct result of only one or two individuals' personal opinions.
While vice versa - a pornographer is able to claim that his photos are 'art' when its obviously just smut.

I came up with the idea that we needed a DA page dedicated to helping to clean up this problem with a fair voting system.
Every deviant 18 and over gets to vote with their respectfully stated opinions on whether or not the piece should be considered art or porn.
That way, everyone gets a say instead of just one or two people.
Of course, I am still in the process of planning how its all going to work, and there are going to have to be rules for everyone to follow to avoid conflict between deviants(if you have any helpful suggestions, please let me know)

I do realize that this is a huge issue that many people feel strongly about, and that it may be a bad idea overall regardless of my good intent to make DA a better place...

Therefore I want to know what my fellow deviants think of this idea.
Do you think this is a good idea for the DA community?

Please tell me what you think and why in my poll:
[link]
I very much respect everyone's opinion on this, and I ask that you all do the same to me and each other while voting.

Thank you!

P.S.~

(yet again, I have no idea if I submitted this in the right category.
please forgive me, if it is incorrectly placed)

I'm not over eighteen, but I think it's still a great idea. I actually know someone who got they're art taken off (but it didn't show anything!) because someone thought it was against their religion. Is that a big problem too, or am I just being annoying?

think it is necessary. because of a very important idea: to each their own. I like this saying a lot. I add to it the idea of not harming others as much as possible. pornography is only harmful when people treat it that way. sex and sexuality are two of the most important factors of being human. we should love our bodies and our ability to connect with another human.

danger comes when young people see things and don't understand them. that is why a voting system could be very helpful. what also is needed is an honest explanation. parents should not hide pornography from their children. they should bluntly explain what it is and why some people enjoy it. they should also explain why it is important to learn about sex, so that they know. keeping kids in the dark is the WORST possible thing a parent can do. becuase then they go to the easiest source of information, the internet. and we all know you can't believe everything you read on the net.

also, NO ONE should be able to tell the artist what to create. that is entirely up to them. it is also important to note that it is the artists responsibility to denote WHAT the image is. that means it is also their responsibility to label it so people have an understanding. if they do not do these things then they probably aren't real artists anyway. if people took a more active role in this way, their would be no need for a voting system.

the line between what is porn and what isn't is EXTREMELY vague. all you have to do (in america anyway) is watch TV for five minutes to see porn. every single beer commercial, victoria secret commercial and everything on MTV is pornography. sure this is not hardore penetrating intercourse, but it is far more disturbing and dangerous. because MTV promotes the attitude that women should be used for sex. all the proof for that is in Rock of Love or any of the other multiple dating shows that have 20 or 30 girls attempting to win whatever monetary prize is offered. they have no interest in love and obviously very little respect for themselves. notice that the shows about 20 or 30 guys going after a girl (I love New York for example)disappeared very quickly. know why? not enough tits to sell the show and make money for MTV.

I make it an effort to watch a wide range of tv and surf a wide range of the internet. do not allow yourself to become blinded by a single point of view. i enjoy pornography. i enjoy the nude human body, male or female. we are beautiful creatures!! we should be proud of ourselves!!

finally i will leave you with the accepted definition for pornography:

por·nog·ra·;phy (pôr-nŏg'rə-fē;) pronunciation
n.

1. Sexually explicit pictures, writing, or other material whose primary purpose is to cause sexual arousal.
2. The presentation or production of this material.
3. Lurid or sensational material: “Recent novels about the Holocaust have kept Hitler well offstage [so as] to avoid the … pornography of the era” (Morris Dickstein).

See what I mean about MTV?

I think the understanding that everyone has the right to believe in what they want to, and create the art they want to as a result of that hasnt quite sunk in yet, for some people who feel strongly about such things. and yes, I agree it can be a problem at times for various artists here and there.
I will not, however, be addressing this issue.
And those who do decide to address it should tread carefully in my opinion...

I'm not 18 but i say if youre gonna lable something porn for showing nudity then what are all those old famous drawings with naked women? It's unfair to call an artist's artwork not art, if the artist believes it is, espeacially if its something beautiful. That's all i have to say. Wish i could vote.

Yeah, just thought I should bring it up. ^^ It's one of the issues I know about, and I just wanted to see if you shared my opinion on the subject.
=SquidWish:iconSquidWish: Mar 17, 2008, 12:04:05 AM
You misunderstand my intentions.
I do not have a problem with nudity in art.
I think it is a wonderful thing and should be appreciated.
The point is to separate the art from the pornography so that the art can be better appreciated as something beautiful.
Artistic nudes belong on DA.
Pornography does not.
