Photo manipulation is the application of image editing techniques to photographs in order to create an illusion or deception (in contrast to mere enhancement or correction), through analog or digital means.
Photo manipulation is often much more explicit than subtle alterations to color balance or contrast and may involve overlaying a head onto a different body or changing a sign's text, for example. Image editing software can be used to apply effects and warp an image until the desired result is achieved. The resulting image may have little or no resemblance to the photo (or photos in the case of compositing) from which it originated.
Is important that you notice that a light change of contrast, shadows, colors is NOT a photomanipulation since the photography stays almost like the original.. You can say that you just fixed some little things, since for example: my camera isnt too good and ALWAYS takes the shots with low contrast, so I ALWAYS need to set a higher contrast on Photoshop (since my camera is all automatic). Also changing to B/W or sephia isnt a photomanipulation.
When you start adding some other stuffs to the photo like: wings, textures or anything taken from another photo to yours or including something new to the photo makes it fit on the category of PHOTO MANIPULATION.
This is really important for me since I appreciate art so much and there are amazing artist that makes the impossible to make a great shot so surreal that doesnt look a real photo.. And posting your photos in the wrong category makes a lot of people, sometimes with no experience believe that is really just a photo (an original one..) That isnt fair for anyone..
Deviant Art describes it like this: "Photomanipulations are images that have been composed of two or more photographic elements to create something new". (and is posted inside the catergory of Digital art)
Both categories (photo manipulation and photography) are great, but would be nice that all people submited their art properly..
MMm...photomanipulationland and it's people. I tell ya!

What about photoshop filters and such? Often I'll add a simple gradient to my image or add a filter to get a cool effect. I don't consider that a manipulation, but I know a lot of people do. (However, if I'm significantly changing the image with lots of different gradients and filters, I do consider it a manipulation.)
Also, what about selective colorization? If you edit your image so that part of it is in color and part of it is in black and white, is that a manipulation? I don't consider it to be because you haven't changed the image... just the color. But I know a lot of artists on here consider it to be a manipulation.
Devious Technology is very proud to announce one of deviantARTs most highly anticipated projects Portfolio: The Awesome Version!! Portfolio is the simplest and most professional tool on the Internet for formal presentation and review of artwork, and the best part is: it's available to everyone for FREE!
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
DaVinci, Picasso, Monet... these are all names I'm sure you've heard of before. They are the Masters of the art world and their talents are world renowned. But have you ever looked at their pieces and thought to yourself "I could do better" or "that would look awesome in a comic style"? Well here's your chance. How would you have painted DaVinci's Mona Lisa? Show me using only Vectors.
When it comes to community spirit, `Rushy is a shining example.
