I am a member of my school's GSA club, and I would like to point out an issue which effects me very closely.
Some of you may or may not know of this, but an event called "Day of Truth", an Anti-Day of Silence, is being put on the calender to be observed at the same time.
The Day of Truth is an anti-gay rights event, in which one of the things that happens (I am not fully aware of all that happens), is parents make the choice of pulling their student out of school for the day, so that they may not encounter anyone celebrating the Day of Silence.
The organization's site describes the Day of Truth as an event, "established to counter the promotion of the homosexual agenda and express an opposing viewpoint from a Christian perspective."
[link]I recently found out about this event from my GSA representative teacher. She had recieved an email (which will not be divulged) from a parent informing the school that a student would be removed for the day because he/she would be participating in the Day of Truth.
This, for me, was the first time encountering face to face (not in the News, or from somebody elses story) opposition of homosexual, bisexual, and transgender people.
I myself plan on participating in the Day of Silence, in order to support gay rights and all who have been subjected to anti-GLBTQ behavior.
The Day of Silence is on April 25th this year (a friday) and will be in memory of Lawrence King, a homosexual boy who was shot for being open about his sexuality.
[link]My school's GSA does as much as we can to support anyone openly Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, or Questioning by informing them as much as we can about the Day of Silence, along with their straight allies, and people at our school in general. We make stickers for those who are participating in the Day of Silence so that people are aware of what they stand for, and we are currently working on brochures to wide spread the information.
However, finding out about the Day of Truth was truly a sour note for all of us in the GSA.
The Day of Truth is proving to be a day that keeps children ignorant of all homosexual arguements by avoiding going to school.
As an openly bisexual person, I ask the open public to become informed, and to even participate in the Day of Silence. Even if you are not gay, you are definitely a valued member of this event. It is appreciable to show that you care about an opressed community and what happens to it. Tell a friend, tell your parents, and tell your school to become aware about the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning people at your school.
Thank you.
