`GeneratingHype on letters, editing and GDship

^lovetodeviate:iconlovetodeviate: reports, August 30
An interview with ex-GD, writer, editor, fascinating person: `GeneratingHype. Here are some tidbits from the interview (which I recommend reading in full):

"Letters presuppose a sort of authenticity, and I truly believe that a story—no matter the form—needs to be authentic and believable.

"Sometimes I wish I had stories such as "I wrote my first published poem at three and a half!" or "I started writing stories at two!", but writing never came easy for me and is still not very easy for me.

The Use of Adverbs in Fiction Writing

=DarcKnyt:iconDarcKnyt: reports, August 29
Adverbs are the endangered species of the adult fiction world. They're frowned on like putting a Baby Ruth bar in a punch bowl at a wedding reception -- not a good idea. They're also indicative of weak writing ... but why? This article covers why adverbs are evil and what you can do to avoid using them.

Where are the Writers?

`GeneratingHype:iconGeneratingHype: reports, April 5
:typerhappy: New Faces

Not too long ago, in an attempt to find and greet all the new faces in Traditional Art, ^sbaraci began a "Welcome Wagon" in which she asked her community to link her traditional artists who were new to dA. To quote her:
"Remember how hard it was to find your way when you just started on DA...? How much you partied when you hit first 100 [pageviews] and then 1000, and when you got your first watcher? How did it feel when someone pimped your work for first time? Well we are going to make that much, much, much easier..."

Well, I decided to steal her idea. There are so many new writers--good, great, and otherwise--who come to this site each and every day. I try to catch those I'm lucky enough to find (sometimes they find me first!), and some of you have already begun sending me links to unknowns, but I'm only one man (on a mission from God) who's part of a busy and excellent four-part team. I can't possibly catch 'em all--none of us can.
Workin' for the Weekend

This is where you (yes, YOU) come in. I think this is an excellent way to extend the "Read More" initiative and also find some new faces to involve in our community.

:spotlight-left: So here's what I need: :spotlight-right:

:bulletgreen: Find a new writer to the site (let's say no longer than 5 months on dA) who has at least one written deviation uploaded to their gallery.
:bulletgreen: Post a link to their page in a comment to this journal.
:bulletgreen: I will visit them and offer some helpful links to get them started, as well as welcome them formally to the community.
:bulletgreen: At the end of the month, I'll choose one deviation from their gallery to feature, along with all the other newcomers, in an article that highlights the up-and-coming members of the Lit community.

:pointr: If you are a new writer to dA who hasn't had much exposure and feels a little lost, and no one has suggested or found you yet, feel free to suggest yourself!

And that's it! If you find a new writer, just send me the link. It's time we started watching and encouraging our newcomers a little more and helping people feel a little less lost when they join this large and sometimes overwhelming site.

 Welcome to dA Literature

For those of you who are new and lost, or those of you who are not-quite-new but still a little lost, here are some helpful links to introduce you to the dA community. Feedback on these links is much appreciated, including how they're set up and what might be missing.

In regards to Literature, dA offers forums, chat, and a plethora of projects and clubs you can be a part of. There are also contests and challenges floating about every once in a while, and I encourage you to get involved in a few.

Here are some helpful links to get started:

~tanzende-fee and ~golovelyrose are two new poets/writers in the neighborhood, both of whom show promise. I really appreciate your efforts to make them and other newcomers welcome.

BTW, I think part of the welcoming process ought to be warning new poets about the poetry.com scam.
