Imagine the Imagination

*gromyko:icongromyko: reports, October 4
Art is distinctively a product of imagination, of that faculty of the mind which has to do with perceiving images, —the image of one thing in the form of another. While science, therefore, may find a single form interesting in itself, art, at its best, never does. It looks for another form with which the first may be compared

Drawing Lesson- Trompe L'oeil

*t001:icont001: reports, April 5
An interesting technique that always aims to impress is Trompe l'oeil. If you are not familiar with trompe l'oeil it is an art technique involving extremely realistic imagery in order to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects appear in three-dimensions, instead of actually being a two-dimensional painting.

I have done several trompe L'oeil drawings that have been successful in different ways. Here are some tips to help you along your way.

Study real life drawings/objects. Take note on how light can effect the way an object appears. Value is also an important part of trompe l'oeil. Just like any other drawing, you must make sure to have enough contrast to create the effects you want.

Create dimensions and perspective. When I use this technique, I like to create different planes for the viewer. By doing this it creates an effect of one object being on top of the other. I've seen many artist create a great sense of depth by using this style. The key to tromp l'oeil is getting a 3-D effect on your piece. In relation to contrast, make sure you cast shadows on the objects you want to stick out.

By placing one object on top of another, planes are created. Also be aware of how your drawing will be presented, if it is going to be hanging, make sure to take that in consideration when attempting to trick the eye.

Since you are trying to trick the eye, when doing trompe l'oeil pieces your objects shoud be as close to real life in size as possible.

Practice drawing different textures. Sometimes it will give your drawings an extra little boost.

I hope I helped. Happy Drawing

I believe in Jesus Christ as my Savior. If you do too and aren't scared to admit it, then copy and paste this in your signature.

so then i thought.. "hey i know this guy!"
great article, it's so true how important contrast is. I think it's only possible to get the very deep tones from using soft mediums like charcoal.

Nice examples, Kris. Neat technique, Trompe L'oeil. I have seen it used in several restaurants to create atmosphere and a feeling of larger space. I'm afraid to try it, I don't know why. What is a good medium for a wall painting, oil? Acrylic?
