Orphan Works, A Response from the Creator.

=Joshi38:iconJoshi38: reports, April 13
There has been a lot of controversy over the proposed Orphan Works Bill, concerning the fears of artists who believe, with inception of the Bill, their art may be used freely and legally without consent of themselves, the copyright holder.

I emailed James Boyle, co creator of the Bill to address these issues and clarify the mistakes certain bloggers have made in interpreting the Bill.

Get Instant Access to a New York Publisher

~bookauthor:iconbookauthor: reports, May 9
When signing a book contract with a traditional New York Publisher the author loses control of the book’s content and cover design as well as the rights to the book. The author typically earns less than 10 per cent of the sale, which translates to less than one dollar per book sold. If the author hires an agent, the profit margin is less, because the agent’s fee is 10 (and sometimes 15) per cent of the author’s share of the profit. Margaret Merrill tapped into a system that provides a complete authoring and business development system with instant access to a New York Publisher. For more information, visit [link].

WRITERS: Submit! & Happy Birthday to Read This

~ReadThisMagazine:iconReadThisMagazine: reports, April 7
Read This Magazine is coming up 6 issues old and we're still going strong. We're on the lookout for fresh, original and awesome writing for our publication, which is run by writers and totally not-for-profit.

Read This: WHAT WE DO

- accept all kinds of writing -- poetry, short fiction, articles, rants, essays and songs -- as well as artwork to make our covers beautiful

- accept submissions from everyone -- no matter what your age, nationality or ability

- read every single submission we get, and respond individually to everyone

- provide detailed feedback on the pieces we turn down, if requested

- provide two free copies of the magazine to anyone printed in it

- judge the submissions we receive solely on merit

- credit everyone whose work we publish

Read This: WHAT WE DON'T DO

- just publish our friends or people we know

- court famous writers to raise our profile, schmooze on forums and blogs, or engage in any of the other snobbery so sadly prevalent in the literary world

- alienate, insult or upset anyone who contacts us (if we do -- we didn't mean to! Tell us about it, quick!)

- insist on a zillion submission rules... just send your stuff!

You can learn all about us on our website at [link] -- find out who we are, what we're about, and how to submit. You can also read heaps of great writing on the website, as well as finding out how to get your hands on the print magazine. (Please note that the site is being totally revamped at present -- so apologies in advance for any glitches!)

You can send your work to submissions@readthismagazine.co.uk -- send submissions any time, we're always after a good read.

+ + + +

Read This Magazine is about to turn 6, with a fantastic issue featuring heaps of excellent prose and poetry -- as always -- as well as artwork from the highly talented ~CheshireSpider. To celebrate, the RT team are holding a huge party at Forest, on Bristo Place, Edinburgh. If you're from the area (or even if you're not!), you are more than welcome to attend -- come along at 8.30pm on 12th April for a night of literary loveliness.
On the bill: Chris Lindores ( ~non-the-road ), Lindis Kipp ( ~lindindin ), Charlotte Runcie, Misa Klimes and RT's very own Lucy Baker ( ~tangerinedreams ) -- plus sweet sweet music courtesy of Ms Alice Challiner.

If you can't make this event, we suggest that you still check out the Read This website -- [link] -- we want to hear from you!

Two Things NOT to do in my Deviant Comments:
1. Thank me for every :+fav: I make. Keep that to the Deviation Comments.
2. Thank me for a :+fav: AND link it. Those will be HIDDEN.
Thank you.

Of course of course... though we don't do consecutive submissions. Since you were in 5, we'd probably save you for 8 or 9 if we decided to include you again.

If you know any arty people whose work is good enough to grace our lovely covers, spread the word! We have zillions of writers but we need artists!
