Today's article may come as a bit of a surprise, given that the club posted one yesterday. Nevertheless, here's another one. Please let me advise that faving this news article will increase the chances of it being seen, and therefore increase the chances of the deviations within it being seen. I (~mrjans) contributed all of these deviations, so I hope you enjoy. ;)

Orphan Works Bill - Clarifications

=s-girl:icons-girl: reports, April 12, 2008
Based on the blog/article at [link]
there seems to be a high level of DA posting around what is stated here, I think there is a need to state that

* There is no 2008 Orphan Bill in front of Congress yet. A search of the Library of Congress ( [link] ) shows that no such bill is currently being evaluated.

At best, based on what we can see from interest groups and from official government sources, it is in draft format ([link]) and was being discussed in the Judiciary subcommittee as of last month ([link])

Note that bills generally have to make it out of subcommittee to be considered on the "floor".

* The Orphan Bill proposed in 2006, along with public discussion and analysis of problems: [link] Many of the issues being discussed in journals now are already reflected in those official documents.

* Online petitions: This may be a point of contention as I'm not sure if staffers consider them all equally valid, as data can easily be faked. So please consider that in addition or instead of signing online petitions that Congresspeople can take your input directly online. Please consider contacting them directly through [link] and [link] .

I dont' know. I'm finding all this chatter on DA and LJ to be a bit presumptuous.

I feel the same, it would be bad if we make a fuss out of hoaxes.

Sides, it only applies to US ya?

bleah. Copyright is such a mess, no one knows how to enforce it internationally and with what media.

The EU is rumored to be considering similar concerns and how to address them. That's what I read, but doesn't mean it's necessarily true.

I don't like the fact that it's this easy for people to react and not do some research themselves. Just because someone writes an article doesn't make it true.

Well, I myself did react to this a little bit, but didn't take it too seriously, since there's no clear evidence. I do spread the words though :D

Yes, it should make people react especially here. People are very sensitive about their rights no matter what field you're in. Problem is that even the original article had no evidence and lots of accusations and probably most people accepted it as true. That's really the issue I have with the internet.

Yup, people don't really double or triple check the info, and that's the problem for gullibility issues.

BTW, nice gallery :D

it sucks, but i think there are plenty of news articles on this, try your journal FAQ #687: What is news and what is not news?
and FAQ #711: Can I remove or edit a news article I have submitted?
