Comments or Cruelty?

I know some may see this as an issue only for BBW models, but really think about it, how many of you have gotten comments that were not helpful in any way, just hurtful, rude and cruel.
I know we can not regulate manners but I think the difference between critiquing someones work and insulting them personally needs to be addressed

Google Chrome EULA warning

=MrThunderfield:iconMrThunderfield: reports, September 3
You might have heard about Googles new web browser Chrome. But people who really read the EULA found out something rather disturbing: Google gets the rights to everything you create or publish with Chrome. So before we get further info about this, I wouldn't recommend submitting deviations with Chrome.

The Truth about "Leaglizing Art Theft" fear

~Michelay:iconMichelay: reports, April 13
Hey, all.

I've come to add my thoughts to this fear that's going on about Congress legalizing art theft. That's not the case!

So here is an article I found through a journal today [link] .

I went a little bit further and found the testimony the Register of Copyrights gave to the Subcommittee on Courts, the Internet, and Intellectual Property, Committee on the Judiciary [link] (I like to have all my facts stright before I go blubbing all around; if I missed something let me know). It's all about "orphaned works" (works like old photographs or movies where the person who wishes to use it can't find the original copyright owner). It also proposes ways to protect the copyright owners of such works should they be found, without hampering people who would like to use their work in such cases. It's actually an easy read, but if you don't care to read the whole thing, the last paragrpah sums it up nicely:

"In closing, we note that millions of orphan works are precluded from productive use by authors, publishers, filmmakers, archives, museums, local historical societies and other users, despite the fact that the copyright owners may never be found. The solution that the Copyright Office has proposed reflects the realities of the problem and creates a framework for limited use. It does not create an exception; nor does it rescind an owner's copyright rights. We look forward to orphan works legislation and we are available to assist that goal in any way we can" -Marybeth Peters; last paragraph of Statement of Marybeth Peters, The Register of Copyrights before the Subcommittee on Courts, the Internet, and Intellectual Property, Committee on the Judiciary.

So, Read the DA news article, read the testimony, and inform yourselves.

I was wondering when there would be a news article on this.

Thanks for posting it. ^_~

Hopefully this'll spread just as fast as the panic did. =)

The legitimate applications are still clouded by the already existing practice of public domain, the abundance of work out there that is not affixed with a copywrite symbol, and the fact that if it’s not a registered copywrite the artist is unable to file a complaint.

The enactment of this legislation gives muscle apparently, to where it does not need to be.

Does anyone really believe that the average individual artist here on deviantArt has the financial backing and time to register all of their artwork, and take on a corporate producer and their team of attorneys if they had to? Bad laws are by and large passed for good reasons and I’m glad the artists here have the wherewithal to stand up for themselves.

Though thanks for looking into this more, every piece of information helps.

from what I understand, sites like DA won't really be affected because it's easy to contact the artist. Every work won't have to be registered--according to copyright law, all art is copyrighted the minute it's set down on paper (or a fixed medium). A site like DA makes it easy for people to contact you if they want to use your art because a link to you is right there.

If all that worried, it seems to me that all you have to do is put you name and a e-mail address or website or something on your art so people will be able to contact you. Because if they don't try and find you (and try hard) this law will penalize them.

I've been seeing alot of these right now :faint:
I read about this from someone who was scared of what it meant, they had heard it from someone else who in turn also heard it from someone else and when I read about it I got scared too because all those people were upset! but this makes me feel better :)
