Now since this is Project Educate I thought I would dabble a bit in correct category placement and my next article will be a bit crazier. I know it sounds a bit dry but I will try and spruce it up and hope that you or someone that happens to pass along may learn something and it will prevent a miscat.
If you have a view of the newest Wild Animals shots that have been submitted you will see the problem, a lot of the shots belong in other categories; even some of the popular images are not in the right category. At the time I am browsing there are 27 out of 120 images and that is
22% of images that are misplaced.
What does this mean to you? You may think that it doesnt matter, who cares? Right? Well the point of having different categories is for organization and easier browsing. Say you want some shot of birds to features, you would look under the Birds category right? Well with all the misplaced images a lot of bird shots wont be there and will be placed somewhere else. It doesnt take a long time to look over the APN categories and the names are quite simple, such as reptiles go into Reptiles and Amphibians! Wow!
So what images are going into
Wild Animals that should be in other categories?
Birds: These are feathered animals with scale like legs with claws and talons. I am sure we all know what they are but they are still not placed in right category.
Aquatic Life: This is a new take on the old Underwater category but it is a lot easier to understand. It implies living things that inhabit marine or freshwater environments which includes plants and animals such as polar bears, fish and whales in water.
Insects and Arachnids: This category includes most invertebrates. Pictures of spiders or butterflies go here not Wild Animals.
Reptiles and Amphibians: This does include lizards, turtles and crocodiles which always seem to creep up in Wild Animals even though all of these animals are actually reptiles.
Miscellaneous: If you have shots of skulls or tracks or remnants of animals that are not living they do belong in the Misc category of APN.
Just stop and think before you submit your image and put it in the right place, or else the GDs will find it later.
All images used have been correctly submitted recently, well done!
