What's in Your Pocket?

^GeneratingHype:iconGeneratingHype: reports, April 17
In honor of 17 April's Poem in Your Pocket Day, we're asking everyone to carry a little piece of dA and share it with someone new.

It's true: some of us spend so much time bringing the real world to dA, but how often do we bring dA to real world? Well, today's your chance to make a dA-difference and earn recognition for all those under-appreciated and overloooked poets on our site. All we're asking is that you choose one poem by a dA writer and share it with someone else. It's that easy!

:star: Have you checked today's Daily Deviations? There are three poetry DDs! Support dA Lit and its writers, and don't miss out on the GD pocket poems.

:bulletred: napoleon at seven by ~trumancoyote
:bulletred: Old Ghosts by ~Danteholic
:bulletred: Vagrant Hearts by =SephirothXer0

:#1: Are you up to the challenge? These folks are!

:icondeltabeta:
=Deltabeta's pocket poem is Loss by ^lovetodeviate.

:iconamy-louise:
~Amy-Louise uses her pocket poem, Fortitude, by =MSJames, for meditation!

:iconfallenrox:
$FallenRox, whose a closet romantic, pays her pocket poem the highest compliment: warm in whispers, by `Myangelofmusic, is simply a poem she enjoys reading and re-reading time and time again. And, in the true spirit of today, stick around for this wonderful (and happily fitting line): "put me in your pocket and take me to your world."

:iconjade-pandora:
*jade-pandora admires the way that *Laurence55 used strands and sentences from National Geographic articles to create something original in Midnight.

:iconhanratty-stock:
^Hanratty-Stock has two pockets to fill, and she's chosen a poem and a song! Her first pocket poem, The Broken Cowboy by ~JesusB, sticks with her thanks to the flow in the first six lines. Just as exciting, So Many Things by *martypunker, is relatable as it relates to the all-too-familiar tale of unrequited love.

:icontaurusj:
=TaurusJ has a poem in each pocket today, and what spectacular poems that are! The first, On Sucking at Poetry, by ^livius, occupies the left pockets for laughs. Meanwhile, *QueenQeeko's poem, Hello, I am Me, has found a nice spot in the right pocket simply for being wonderful.

:icondveditor:
^DVeditor has several pockets, and each is going to be filled today! His first pocket poem is A Collection of Thoughts by ~seven-ate-nine--a poem that mixes humor with "simple truth". In another pocket you'll find ~thelovetheory's poem, Ironic Lovesong, for its ability to say so much in so few words. In yet a third pocket, Metamorphosis, by ~parteroftheredsea finds a home and teaches us what a sestina is supposed to be.

:library: Other Important Pocket Poems

It's also true that there is some pretty spectacular poetry off dA, and sometime today these fine poems might also make their way into a pocket or two:

:pointr: ~toothfish: I chose Barter by Sarah Tisdale. It starts, "spend all you have for loveliness/buy it and never count the cost..." This poem reminds me that the world is still beautiful and is a refreshing look to the future, or any moment in which pain is a memory rather than reality.

:pointr: ^lovetodeviate: I feel a bit like Alice -- a child in wonder --, when I read
Antimatter by Russel Edson. It reads cleanly and has some sharp imagery, but most of all, it reflects the world we live in: confused and contradictory. The poem baffled me in the best way possible
.

:pointr: *batousaijin: this is a perfect chance to share one of my favorite billy collins poems because it's already posted on poets.org. It's called Litany. i first heard it when i went to a poetry reading of his sponsored by my university. he introduced it like this (paraphrased):
I stole the first two lines of another poem and rewrote the rest, as a professional courtesy. The problem I had with his poem was that it seemed to assume that what women wanted was not companionship or faithfulness or love and affection, but that what women wanted was similes: the more things you compare her to, the more headway you'll make.

with that introduction, Litany came to be the funniest poem I have ever heard, EVAR!

:typerhappy: Now it's your turn!

So, what's your pocket poem? After sharing it with someone else, drop a link in a comment here and share it with new folks on dA, too. You can also take a look at this forum thread where dA folks intelligently discuss their favorite poems. Get in on the action!

Don't forget to support NaPoWriMo and Tanka Month in honor of National (USA) Poetry Month!

 Have a Happy Pocket Poem dA-y!

I've shared it with 3 acquaintances and 5 strangers and it's been inducing some heavy sighs :)

I think I'll continue my own pocket-poem days.. besides showing off the incredible talent on DA, they're a wonderful way to express your present mood to others, through someone elses words :)
