Glamour Week interview with Threelibras

^Ghouldaddy:iconGhouldaddy: reports, April 21
In association with project Educate I'd like to welcome you to Glamour Week here on deviantART. All week I'll be conducting a series of interviews with a few of the best Glamour photographers on deviantART. I am pleased to kick things off with ~ThreeLibras

1)First off introduce yourself? Who are you, where are you from? What are you wearing :P

My name would be Janusz Miller. I'm 25 yo photographer based in Poland, currently working mostly in two cities: Gdansk and Szczecin. And I'm sitting on my ass wearing a pair of old jeans and a striped tshirt ;) It's 4.30 p.m., I have a cig in my lips, a glass of grapefruit juice in front of me, and Milla Jovovich album playing in the background.

2)What first drew you to photography?

The thing that first drew me to photography was drawings ;) More or less. As a kid I loved to draw... on paper, walls, myself (last one eveolved into love for tattoos). When I got my internet connection at home i realized, that there is so damn many talented people out there who draw far better then I did... so I simply gave it up. After some years I saw photos by one Polish photographer (who I got to know in person some time later) and I thought to myself "damn... I want to do stuff like that too" ... so I simply started to take photos.

3)How would you describe your personal style? And when did you know you had one?

I never think of myself as a person who has a specyfic style in photography... I never did and dunno if I ever will. For me style is something that true masters have. Newton, Lindbergh, Klein, Avedon, Richardson... these are some of the masters regarding whom I can say that they have style, one that totally speaks to me. I know what I like in photos, I know that some of my works are characteristic at some point, but I wouldn't call it style. Too big word for a too small photographer :) At least at the present moment.

4)In your view, what makes a great glamorous photo?

I guess that there is a rule for all photos, neverming if it is nude, reportage, landscape, portrait: capturing the right thing in the right moment. Nothing more, really. There are no rules or guidelines... do this, do that, aim at certain angle, have your MUA do this or that and so on... this stuff is of course important, like hell it is, but still... it's all a matter of capturing the image.

5)What do you look for in a model for your work?

I like the images of women who are real... all in one, strong, happy, sad, in a good mood, in a bad mood, in no mood at all.

6)Describe a typical shoot for you..from concept on down

Thought, talk, prepare, shoot.
Or something like this.
I like to work fast. Even after the shoot is done I edit the images as soon as possible as I don't like them laying around on the hard drive waiting to be done for no reason.

7)Is there anyone that you wish to work with?

Sure :) Loads of people. Let me see... umm, as for photographers Newton will always be my no. 1, but unfortunetly it is beyond possibility. So if I had to narrow the choice to the living ones I guess I'd have to say: Lindbergh, Von Unwerth, Klein, Testino :) So these are the photographers. As for models I'd love to shoot Daria Werbowy, Amber Valetta, Lara Stone, Nadja Auermann and many others, but these are the names that come to my mind first. I'd like to do some work with people that are not connected to photography as much, take portraits of them or do some collab stuff, people like Alan Wilder, Banksy, Matthew Barney... and again, many others that are also in my head, but didn't get out right now due to the fact that I'm sleepy, disorganized or whatever :)

8)I know for myself, music and my friends/lifestyle, movies are a big influence on my work, what influences you day to day? And does it creep into your work...

I was talking about influences like a day ago to a friend of mine and I realized, that I cant just give a specific example that I'm inspired by for instance: green cups with furry cows on them ;) When it comes to everyday life I guess the things I see or hear just soak into me and they simply are inside. There is no "hey, that inspires me" thought or stuff like that. I'm a huge movies fan as well as I'm crazy about music. There are too many to name them all, but some of the poeple that simply amaze me when it comes to movies are Inarritu, Copolla, Aronofsky, Smith, Gilliam, Bergman, Ondricek... to name a few. Does it creep into my work? I think it is impossible for it not to... as I said it all soaks into me, then it's all submited to my soaky mind and it's ways and rules... so it is impossible for me to simply turn off that part of me when I work.

9)How did find deviantART, and why stay?

I have totally absolutly no damn idea how I found it :)
And why did I stay here? Well, to be honest at first I found it really not very amazing and stunning. But as time was passing and I started to discover different people and their works I realized that there is some really fantastic stuff here. Right now I guess i'm watching about 450 people and the list sometimes grows when I accidently find someone new who can blow me away a little. I wish I had more time to browse among the people who do other stuff then photography only, and I do watch some designers or painters... but the site is simply too big to know it all ;)

10) Any particular fav people on deviantART?

So now I'll name some... and hopefully not piss off some that I didn't name.
First ones that come to my mind are Beddy, SnjezanaJosipovic, KonradJakubowski, Vuda, CrazyTob, stefa-zozokovich, bowi, SerenaD, retrodiva88. VladimirBorowicz

11) What are your fav pieces of art on dA?

Omg... even harder then naming the people :D
(browsing through favs)
Again... if you asked me like in a week there is a huge chance that I would point to different works. I'm showing you the ones I choose by manners of pure impulse on this specific moment.

The thing about Tobs works is that I totally adore how real they are. There is no fake stuff, it's a pure and simple capturing of everyday stuff, stuff we often don't pay attention too. He does :) At least this is the way I see his works.

I actually have a photo of the same person, from a different shoot... also coupled with an image of sea waves :) It just happened, unintended. So I was totally amazed that both of us, separately had the same idea when it comes to that girl :) Her eyes are indeed one of the most intense things I've ever seen.

This one because it shows my dream view form a window at my dream flat :) Colors, mood, sight... everything is just the way I'd like it to be.

I have this piece in a very big sized prints on my wall... I look at them every day... it simply speaks to me.

attitude :)

12) What's your favourite image of your own
These questions just keep getting harder and harder ;)

I'll go with this one...
We were shooting for a whole day. We had like two models at the same time at the agency I work at that day. It was at the very end of a shoot when I wanted to mess up the makeup and hair of Amber, but as I realized, the photographer I was shooting with had the same idea independently. Whe she finished taking photos I wanted to doo a couple of portraits. Unfortunetly something got busted in my camera. It turned out that one of the joints got messed up. I had a choice... not to shoot and take the camera to some place where it will get fixed which would involve waiting for it to be done and so on, or simply to fix it myself, and do it fast too. I took a kitchen knife... and yea, fixed it :) I was using a manual old 85mm lens atteched to my canon through an adapter. Still the exif is weird, as canon usually shows a 55mm focal lenght and a f1.4 when you use that stuff... here there is no focal given at all and the aperture shows 1.8... I have no idea why. So this is the technical side of it ;) And as for the photo itself I love it for the intense stare, I guess it can be called predatory :) It's like a duel for me and I see it as if she could just attack in a blink of and eye and pierce right through the opponent. I have it hanging above my bed, so when I wake up I see it each day and have a little stare contest in which I always loose... which actually means for me that I've won when I took the photo, if you get what I mean :)

13) Where would you like to see deviantART head in terms of it's Photography galleries?
Less fake crap, more real works :) I understand that there are trends and so on... but come on, sometimes I have a feeling that 20 authors take the same photo over and over again.

14) What are you up to? Any projects planned?
I'm up to reclaim the hour I've spent writing this text :D No, kidding :)
I want to do some stuff that is different from my present works... and also do something that is as simple and classic as it gets. Right now I'm in a weird place when it comes to photos... I'm looking for something but I don't know what. But hopefully I'll find it. Lond time ago I've read a sentence that is so damn true, it went something like: I know what I want from photography, but I don't know what photography wants from me.

and some beauty from ~ThreeLibras' gallery:
