London Street Photography = Police Harassment..

`Obsidian-Fox:iconObsidian-Fox: reports, April 24, 2008
NOTE: These links have JUST been compiled so YOU have access to the information. I did not write any of them, and I was not the first to post links to some of them. Rather than send people all over, I posted them here.

Thanks to Chris Weeks for reminding me I was sitting on these links, with his blog on UBER.com

:iconblankspaceplz:
There is a new poster campaign in London aimed at 'our kind' and by our kind i mean Street Photographers. I have compiled a few articles regarding the new involvment by metropolitan Police.

Street photographers fear for their art amid climate of suspicion

Stop the aperture closing on street photography

Innocent photographer or terrorist?

Photography rights raised at MP event

You can't picture this - Video

Police defend anti-terror photo campaign

Photographic Rights, and the law

As it says in one of the articles,

"A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police said the campaign is not intended to target photographers, amateur or professional.

She told us: 'It's part of a counter-terrorism campaign and one element is the camera element.'

Discuss.. What do you think of these ridiculous laws and harassments?

If you are a British Citizen, SIGN the PETITION and show the PM that photographers will not take this laying down!

in london, you can just about shoot the big tourist attractions, otherwise it can become a real hassle. not always but there's a definite climate of paranoia.

'Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?'
'That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,'
'I don’t know where. . .'
'Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,' said the cat.

I shot everything I wanted to in London last year... no problems.

What are they gonna do next? Say you can't paint a picture from memory because it invades someone's copyright? Puh-lease.

Does this mean I can sue the CCTV people in London for photographing me about 2872361 times while I was there?

I guess that means that I will cross france off my list of places to visit.. At least with my current significant other.. (camera) <--As much as I think it's a shame that street photography is becoming "harder" due to silly ad campaigns and laws, I think it's an even bigger shame that people have this attitude of not visiting places because of them!

Good god, we had the very same sort of thing happen at one of our local city landmarks (Southbank, in Melbourne, Australia). A tourist was taking pictures of the building because, funnily enough, they're interesting buildings to take pictures of (!!!!!) and security and the complex management decided on a no photography ruling anywhere on the promenade. It was ridiculous. There was a huge protest via way of a big gathering of photographers to that spot. Management removed the signs and backed down though you can't take pictures inside the complex anymore. Poo.

In the video from London, the man was talking back to the police, here in the states, you may get your ass beat for that (especially if you are a minority and/or live in LA). Also they would use your actions as a reason to search you and possibly take you in to custody for disorderly conduct.
