DENYING THE POVERTY DRAFT-THE SOLDIER AS A SYMBOL

=whitetrashpalace:iconwhitetrashpalace: reports, 2d 3h ago
The Poverty Draft, Politics, Symbols, and the inconvenience of being human.

Even in times of war, the Soldier as an individual is of no consequence. The Soldier is a symbol, a simple pawn in a culture war. The Soldier is either a villain, or a Hero. The Soldier always serves for the honor of his country, not his paycheck. The Soldier is faithful, as there are 'no atheists in the trenches'. The Soldier is Combat Arms. The Soldier is male, he married a young white girl, and he has a baby on the way, whom he has never met.

The Soldier is a romantic ideal.

A Feminist Perspective on Questionable Images

~sick-snowangel:iconsick-snowangel: reports, July 1
Sex and sexuality in art are some of my favorite things, and certainly sometimes arousal is part of this, but more importantly, it is FAR MORE than about simple arousal, as porn is. One of my deviantart friends, :iconcypherthepanicartist: , said that art of a sexual nature can “ provoke thoughts about our dreams, fears, desires, and place in the world"...yes! Well done art that deals with sex exposes the soul of the subject or act in question, not just the naughty bits. I feel that any kind of work on this site that looks at sexuality in a thoughtful or artistic or critical or celebratory, etc. way is certainly appropriate content for an art site, because, of course, this work is actually ART.

Graffiti: Art or Vandalism?

~jjankk:iconjjankk: reports, July 7
This is an extremely old article from 2005 but I found it interesting.
It explains how some graffiti artists began to sell their art for money. There are people in the world who think that graffiti is art and not vandalism and other who feel the opposite way. I feel like graffiti is a work of art and should not be banned or should not be against the law. Even though I consider graffiti art I don't think it should be sold to galleries and to people. I think graffiti was meant for the streets and that's where it should stay. What's your opinion on this topic?

I am seeing an ever more disturbing trend here...

*CozmicDreamer:iconCozmicDreamer: reports, April 25, 2008
Today, I found myself discovering a heartbreaking trend.

I was viewing all my dev-watches, and saw some lovely traditional works. What it made me feel was sad, and upset. Why? Because the artist that has created it, thought it was of poor quality, and wanted to place it in scraps, simply because it had been done with acrylics, and a palette knife!

I have been seeing cases just like this all around Deviant Art! Why is this that a whole lot more of us are under the impression that if it isn't digitally immaculate that is isn't worth anything?!

There are so many Digital Arts here on dA, that we traditional artists are beginning to think that "actual brush strokes, and pencil marks" are looking more, and more remedial, and that is so far from the actual truth!

We Traditional Artists are still practicing sadly, a dying classical art-form, and we must keep struggling to remain amongst the quagmire, and even more crowded Digital Generation of "ART"

We simply cannot lose sight of our creative origins, then feeling as though our work is paling in comparison to these computer generated imageries. Our style of art is invaluable, as they come from our hearts, souls, and "HANDS!"

Now, I am NOT asking for any sort of Boycott of Digital, I just feel that the traditional arts are being overlooked and yes,...even looked down upon as "less skilled", and even considered "lower quality."

That is simply not true!

I have even caught myself feeling like I am obligated to make Digital Arts instead of my Traditional Artwork! Now THAT... has disturbed me!

I had to air this concern as it is really beginning to get to me. The sadness I feel about fellow Traditional Artists losing their sense of self worth, really pains me! We all deserve the highest praise and respect for what we do.

I hope I haven't offended anyone, but I had to say my piece!

Most true. A lot of people would tell me 'wow, that would be really cool if it were in color' when they looked at my pencil work, which I used to do exclusively. So based on pressure, I moved to trying to learn Photoshop. Now that I've been playing in Photoshop (which I love) I find that there is a lot more I love about my traditional media and I've got several serious graphite pieces lined up. It's Good Stuff, and there's something to be said for something that came right out of your hand, with no computer fixes available.

I know...I have thought the same! I entered a coloring contest here on dA, and It was open to both traditional and digital media. I figured that I would give digital a try...It was both fun and challenging. But I refuse to let go of my traditional roots!

I totaly agree.

I do digital aswell as traditonal....
however I only do digital ones when I believe they will look better than the traditional version =P

I always try to comment on the incredible traditional works here aswell.
There is a relatively popular artist called *ShadowUmbre who uses digital a lot, but her traditional arts are simply amazing =D

Anyway... I believe that if the originally traditional art isnt good.. the digital wont be either.
Any popular deviant who can draw digitally (which takes much work) can do just as well traditionally.

It seems as though it's 'better' when it is actually just very well done.
I see digital art everywhere, but not all of it is necessarily good.
I find that several traditional artists I watch are better than most digital artist I watch =P

It's true. When I draw a pencil piccie I'm proud of I get like... 1-2 faves? A digital piese (whom I think is not soooo nice) got over 30. It's really not fair... I'm always thinking about making no more pencil art because it just doesn't get the attention it needs!

I have not found that to be true. What the work is matters more than how it was made.
=scenceable:iconscenceable: Apr 25, 2008, 12:51:53 PM
I think it depends, although I agree that it is a lot easier to make something look nicer in digital than trad. it takes a lot of skill to do either well, but I see your point. it's just a popularity thing though, all this faves and pageviews crap, so I think as long as the artist is proud of their own work, it shouldn't matter about the response it gets. (although obviously the response DOES matter- it shouldn't, lol)
=Meeliah:iconMeeliah: Apr 25, 2008, 4:01:40 PM
I'm more of a digital artist myself. However, I still call my tool of choice my hands. So I'm a little offended that your article doesn't include hands as a digital artists tools. I will give you credit for this article because my traditional works rarely make it to deviantArt.
Traditional artists need to appreciate that their art is most appreciated in RL and digital art is most appreciated in its digital form. The two forms need not be compared, just appreciated differently.
No one get offended-I'm favoriting the article.

You are so right, it's sad when the art that we all began with becomes the lowly one. Sure digital is hard, but not more than any other kind of art. Thanks for bringing this to our sight ^^ It's good to know that others feel the same way.
