Differences between Manga/Anime and Fanart Submissions.
Manga/Anime Art: The manga and anime style of art which originated from eastern countries like Japan. This is deviantARTs description for the category. This seems to be a broad definition; however there is a much clearer way to explain it to everyone. To submit into the Manga/Anime category there is one major thing that you should remember.
If you are submitting an image to the Manga/Anime category, it must be an original image of your own character. This category is meant for your own characters that you create. Now Im not talking about a fan character for a specific anime. I mean your own original character from a storyline that you created. These are the characters that are allowed in the Manga/Anime category.
If youre wondering, Well then were do my fan characters go? Because they are my characters. ^
ArtisticAunJuli has already mentioned once before that fan characters for any series belongs in the fanart category. The same thing applies when you are drawing your friends character. If the character is not your own, or if they belong in a fan universe, then they belong in the fanart category.
Fanart: DeviantARTs definition for fanart is, Fan artwork based on copyrighted material such as books, movies, TV shows, comics, cartoons and games. This is a really clear explanation that is really simple. Basically if it is not your own, then you should submit it in there. As stated earlier this includes fan characters.
Also say if your friend has a birthday coming up, and you want to draw an image of their character for his or her birthday, and you submit it to dA. Where would the image belong? A lot of people would think Manga/Anime because of how its not a copyrighted character. However, each piece of art that is submitted to this website is protected by copyright; therefore your friends character is copyrighted to them. Therefore the image would be posted in fanart.
Also Remember:
If you are unsure about where an image should be submitted you can contact your local gallery directors (GDs). If you arent sure who they are just take a look at this;

I even learned something: I wasn't sure about original characters created for a known universe. So all the colorful hedgehogs and "original" Pokémons should go to fan art, if I understand correctly.
