DENYING THE POVERTY DRAFT-THE SOLDIER AS A SYMBOL

=whitetrashpalace:iconwhitetrashpalace: reports, 7h 4m ago
The Poverty Draft, Politics, Symbols, and the inconvenience of being human.

Even in times of war, the Soldier as an individual is of no consequence. The Soldier is a symbol, a simple pawn in a culture war. The Soldier is either a villain, or a Hero. The Soldier always serves for the honor of his country, not his paycheck. The Soldier is faithful, as there are 'no atheists in the trenches'. The Soldier is Combat Arms. The Soldier is male, he married a young white girl, and he has a baby on the way, whom he has never met.

The Soldier is a romantic ideal.

A Feminist Perspective on Questionable Images

*sick-snowangel:iconsick-snowangel: reports, July 1
Sex and sexuality in art are some of my favorite things, and certainly sometimes arousal is part of this, but more importantly, it is FAR MORE than about simple arousal, as porn is. One of my deviantart friends, :iconcypherthepanicartist: , said that art of a sexual nature can “ provoke thoughts about our dreams, fears, desires, and place in the world"...yes! Well done art that deals with sex exposes the soul of the subject or act in question, not just the naughty bits. I feel that any kind of work on this site that looks at sexuality in a thoughtful or artistic or critical or celebratory, etc. way is certainly appropriate content for an art site, because, of course, this work is actually ART.

Graffiti: Art or Vandalism?

~jjankk:iconjjankk: reports, 2d 12h ago
This is an extremely old article from 2005 but I found it interesting.
It explains how some graffiti artists began to sell their art for money. There are people in the world who think that graffiti is art and not vandalism and other who feel the opposite way. I feel like graffiti is a work of art and should not be banned or should not be against the law. Even though I consider graffiti art I don't think it should be sold to galleries and to people. I think graffiti was meant for the streets and that's where it should stay. What's your opinion on this topic?

Common Sense: Supporters, please stand up.

!Ryusei-Forever:iconRyusei-Forever: reports, May 3, 2008
Alright, so I'm looking on Deviantart and checking out some new deviations that have just popped up. I click one that I see I might like and I skim the description and title. So I like the work. I then go down, make a comment and--if I like it enough--place in a favorite.

Sure, that's a everyday thing for the users on Deviantart.com but on this everyday road through the site, I've finally decided to comment on something that ruins the notion of common sense and sends tempers through the roof: people who flame art. This is not a rant. This is rather...a suggestion for people who lack the common sense to just leave. Now, where I come from is America. As much as it seems a dictatorship in some areas, people would argue, America is not a tyrant country. We the People of the United States have the power to come and go, doing things as we please. So why is it that so many people are compelled to rant and rave on a deviation that they personally think is distasteful?

Let's pick a typical theme I see out there: yaoi. It's the romantic inclination for boy on boy contact. There is no reason for a person who does not like yaoi to click on a fanfiction that says 'John Doe x Josh Doe', click on the mature content blocker, read the description at the bottom AND in the deviation itself that says 'this contains yaoi/shounen-ai/boy love/homosexuality', and then continue to proceed to comment with 'that was horrible and disgusting. How could you write that? You're going to hell.'

There is such a thing as the 'back' button. There is such a thing as the skill called 'reading'. There is such a thing called the 'x' button in the upper righthand corner. There is such a thing called common sense, which people seem to throw out the window whenever something they don't like comes there way. If you always get hit with a rock whenever you drive on a country road, then you stop taking on that road. You don't keep driving on it!

We're not going to hate you if you dislike a certain type of art, but there's no reason for you to go out of your own way just to type some kind of hurtful comment that that deviant didn't even deserve. Just go back to your safe little corner and leave the big bad mature content stuff alone. All you're doing is giving that genre a bad name, and that's not what art is about. Art is about sharing the emotional and physical gratification of beauty and thought with others and giving the feedback it needs. Flaming and positive criticism are two totally different things. Please take that to heart, okay? :)

I totally agree with you. I hate seeing people who flame others just for apparent reason. It ticks me off! They should be able to tolerate it and if not, just click back. "If you can't think of anything nice to say, don't say anything at all"

-nods- I take action on that. If I see someone who's flamed a piece of art, I yell at them and tell them why they're wrong.

Well-written and true! I've never understood why some people are so inclined to comment negatively, when they could just as easily walk away and ignore it... If people flame on my deviations, I just hide their comments so they can't offend anyone else. :aww:

Hell yeah! People need to quit flaming others for no reason. People are just self concious about their own art and decide to flame others to make themselves feel better. Use your common sense people! Thanks Ryusei for pointing it out.
