DENYING THE POVERTY DRAFT-THE SOLDIER AS A SYMBOL

=whitetrashpalace:iconwhitetrashpalace: reports, 4h 5m ago
The Poverty Draft, Politics, Symbols, and the inconvenience of being human.

Even in times of war, the Soldier as an individual is of no consequence. The Soldier is a symbol, a simple pawn in a culture war. The Soldier is either a villain, or a Hero. The Soldier always serves for the honor of his country, not his paycheck. The Soldier is faithful, as there are 'no atheists in the trenches'. The Soldier is Combat Arms. The Soldier is male, he married a young white girl, and he has a baby on the way, whom he has never met.

The Soldier is a romantic ideal.

A Feminist Perspective on Questionable Images

*sick-snowangel:iconsick-snowangel: reports, July 1
Sex and sexuality in art are some of my favorite things, and certainly sometimes arousal is part of this, but more importantly, it is FAR MORE than about simple arousal, as porn is. One of my deviantart friends, :iconcypherthepanicartist: , said that art of a sexual nature can “ provoke thoughts about our dreams, fears, desires, and place in the world"...yes! Well done art that deals with sex exposes the soul of the subject or act in question, not just the naughty bits. I feel that any kind of work on this site that looks at sexuality in a thoughtful or artistic or critical or celebratory, etc. way is certainly appropriate content for an art site, because, of course, this work is actually ART.

Graffiti: Art or Vandalism?

~jjankk:iconjjankk: reports, 2d 9h ago
This is an extremely old article from 2005 but I found it interesting.
It explains how some graffiti artists began to sell their art for money. There are people in the world who think that graffiti is art and not vandalism and other who feel the opposite way. I feel like graffiti is a work of art and should not be banned or should not be against the law. Even though I consider graffiti art I don't think it should be sold to galleries and to people. I think graffiti was meant for the streets and that's where it should stay. What's your opinion on this topic?

Kick the click?

=ericthom57:iconericthom57: reports, May 5, 2008
I understand the idea I'm about to float has been broached before on deviantART. But maybe it was before my time here. So please indulge this little idea/rant...or feel free to stop reading here.

In the past couple of months I've seen a couple of photographers I watch and admire choose to leave dA. Their reason -- which is becoming much too common -- is that their art is being repeatedly stolen from deviantART.
I suppose that placing your art here, or on most any similar site, puts it at some risk of theft. But I have to wonder aloud why, since theft apparently is an ongoing concern, those who own and run deviantART wouldn't at least make it an option for subscribers to disable the right-click option to copy photos. The option would be a welcome addition to being able to un-click the download option for deviations. That would be two deterrents.

Disabling the right-click option certainly wouldn't stop theft completely. Thieves will find a way to steal. It's what they do. But giving those of us who subscribe the option of disabling right-click could at least be another deterrent.
Just a thought to float out there. I have no delusion this single news article will make a difference or ultimately give us the option. Or perhaps it will be the seed...

There are plenty of easy ways to get around any right click blocking so it isn't really worth depriving people of the other functions in the contextual menus. The add watermark feature is there for this exact reason and its a lot harder to remove a watermark than it is to find an image's URL from the page source.

Watermarking is certainly a good way to protect an image.

Eric, can you elucidate on the "theft" problem. Are you saying that these guys left because their artwork was stolen and republished falsely by someone else? Or their ideas were stolen?
How did they find out?

However, surely dA is more a "community" rather than a "retail" site? If I was that protective of my images I wouldn't be posting them here.

Unless it was for devious (no pun intended) reasons I wouldn't mind that much if an image was reproduced somewhere by "persons unknown".
But then I've not been in that position - so maybe I would react with some anger.

Certainly worth some pondering indeed ... :salute:

Copyright laws are difficult to enforce and rely mostly on the artist to do some "footwork." That said, I would like to see dA become a little more involved in protecting copyrighted work.

Certainly dA allows several different options for the individual artist regarding copyright license, but it would be nice to see more strenuous warnings to potential art thieves as well as a more proactive approach taken on behalf of dA members regarding art theft. One such approach might be a forum where copyright infringements might be discussed and tips could be passed among members regarding their work. Members could also notifiy each other when works from the dA membership is spotted on offending sites. I know that PhotoBucket and even MySpace has members who choose to ignore copyright infringement laws and actually have items for sale (coffee mugs, mouse pads, t-shirts, etc.) using art stolen from dA member.

=ericthom57:iconericthom57: May 6, 2008, 9:20:51 AM
According to the posts I saw, those who've left have found their work on other sites (Flickr in particular) for sale by others who apparently falsely were claiming it as their own.
I will say that in a few cases where someone claimed their work was stolen I've found it was displayed by someone else as great work, and if you clicked the photo it would take you back to that deviant's page.
No doubt there is some over-reaction on the part of some. But I can understand the wish to protect one's work, especially if it is a means of income.
Killing the right-click option certainly won't stop the true thieves. They just have a devious streak in them that we'll never be able to stop. The idea was just an idea I decided to float and I'm impressed by the thoughtful comments (including yours!) on the subject.
Thanks much for your comments and contribution to the dialogue!

I agree with the watermark idea, capnhack. I personally find the dA watermark annoying, but it does serve as a quality deterrent.
That said, individual deviants have found ways to place watermarks that are less intrusive and do not ruin the artwork for those of us who enjoy the visuals.
Thanks much for your comments and contribution to the discussion!

That's a rather interesting thought. I don't think it even crossed my mind when I thought about art theft.
