Film Gallery Restructure

Film Gallery Restructure

You may have noticed that the Film categories are going a little crazy lately... maybe you didn't but they were! This was not a glitch! It's $Moonbeam13 Tirelessly rebuilding the structure, turning it on its head, and moving everything around. We (the film team) decided a while ago, that the current structure was not conducive to the growth of a community as varied and un-predictable. The way it was, no matter what you were looking for, unless you went all the way to the end of the category path, to one type of animation or film, you always would have animation and film mixed together. It was frustrating, especially on the hunt for DD's ;) We also found it lacking in many areas, missing categories. Of course none of this could have been predicted, but we continue to expand and grow as a community, and as gallery Directors, learning constantly about what you need from us, and overcoming the challenges to bring them to you.

The new structure, has made several changes

1. the "Film" gallery, is now, "Film&animation"
This more accurately represents the category as a whole.

2. Animation and Film are both top categories.
you now browse by film or animation, not both jumbled together (unless you choose). This is the major improvement to the category structure, and the number one reason. This will help people, and yes even employers find what they are looking for.
So now it goes like this:
:pointr: Film&animation> Film OR Animation
and filters down from there. Its awesome!

3. Animatics category
We've added categories for animators to include their animatics in a specific place. Pre and post production are an important aspect of film making, and we thought that it would be best to have a place just for them

4. Pre renders and Line tests
Many people once they had film privileges, found that there was no place to post their rough animation (which we love to see) except in the old Traditional animation >;pencil tests category, but with the film privileges, it recognized the video file, and only gave you the film submission process (which is different from regular submission) this is no longer an issue as there are now categories for it. These categories would contain your W.I.P. and your rough animation, and pre rendered 3d animation.

5. video Art
Video Artists now have a place to post their very unique work in specific category. thre are 2 sub categories of that, Signal-channel & Installation.

6. Trailers
Many of you create trailers for your larger film projects, and many major companies can post their trailers on dA now, with the addition of the trailers category, and its sub categories.

7. Fractals
Fractal animations now have their very own category under 3d animation :) Fractal animation are an unexpected delight for the film community!

There are many more additions and subtractions in this new structure. The important thing is, the addition of new categories can be more easily fit into the category structure and we can grow and adapt as the community does.

How this affects your gallery

You may have noticed your film moved into an odd category, and wondered why, it was most likely the result of a category being changed and your films being bulk moved to the most logical place. This doesn't mean its the correct place. Don't panic or be angry please. just edit your deviation and find the new place for it. its alright. If you are confused, feel free to contact a film team member ( list can be found at ^deviantartfilm ) and ask where the most appropriate place is.
The film team will also be going through the galleries and moving things around afterwards, so you may notice additional moves to your work in that time. Again, don't panic, we are just cleaning up, and sorting it all out. feel free to contact us, or move your own films if you like. We'd appreciate it too, because its less work for us :giggle:

Soon this will all be clean and we can enjoy the new possibilities the gallery has to offer! In the mean time there is some slight issues still being worked out, and some categories yet to be cleared and removed etc.
Thanks for your patience.

I see it reworked, indeed. Separating (live) films from animation is a good idea.
I see there is, at time of writing, still lot of first level categories, like Drama > Film. I suppose they will eventually disappear, it must be part of ongoing work.
I find a bit surprising that Fractals are only under 3D category. Do people make only 3D animated fractals? Why isn't a 2D fractal category? I don't mind the choice, I am just curious... =)
I see there is a place for rough works too.
I suppose Traditional art > Animation will be the place for sub-standard (size or time) works only? Lot of animations there have only around a dozen of frames...

82% of statistics in signatures are made up. :rip: (This is a recursive signature...)
Spreading them is un-original and sheepish. If you agree, copy this in your... wait, no! :D
No to signature clichés! You are on an art site, be creative!

It seemed more palatable to have fractals in one place instead of split, and 3d was the better one because even the 2d ones have a 3d feel.
