One of the categories that makes me proud the most about our Film Gallery is that big corner for experimental films,we have. As I understand it, experimental filmmaking is the origins of short filmmaking and a very complex yet rich and simple way to make your first steps in film.
Experimental filmmaking could be described as the art of making films in ways that are opposed to all classic and standard techniques, and it's particularly distinctive of those filmmakers trying to express a concept through a movie, or represent an idea (i.e. a personal interpretation of life or a determinate event), and transmit it to others.
Within this category, Avant-garde, or underground or filmmaking, is characterised by a non-linear narrative and a wide range of techniques of abstraction, such as using distortions and blurs or illumination contrasts or in analog film and now in digital moviemaking thru the use of video-editors, with the use of dark-room techniques to alter the original takes in an abtract way. It might also be asynchronous or silent.
One could say experimental filmmaking is somewhat opposed to the mainstream culture and the conventional ways of filmmaking, more radical and that it pushes the viewer to place herself more into the film and be precisely less of an expectator to take an active role within it.
Is in within those parameters that experimental Film and Video Art are tightly bound but thankfully today, we found Video Art in its own category, in deviantART.
