Sex and sexuality in art are some of my favorite things, and certainly sometimes arousal is part of this, but more importantly, it is FAR MORE than about simple arousal, as porn is. One of my deviantart friends, :iconcypherthepanicartist: , said that art of a sexual nature can “ provoke thoughts about our dreams, fears, desires, and place in the world"...yes! Well done art that deals with sex exposes the soul of the subject or act in question, not just the naughty bits. I feel that any kind of work on this site that looks at sexuality in a thoughtful or artistic or critical or celebratory, etc. way is certainly appropriate content for an art site, because, of course, this work is actually ART.

I'm leaving this place!!

=phydeau:iconphydeau: reports, May 17, 2008
Not me, personally. But I'm seeing an alarming trend of amazing artists who are getting frustrated with devianART because of what their viewers are doing, and deleting their accounts (or at the very least, deleting their galleries). In the past two weeks, I've seen the demise of three incredible galleries.

One could put the blame on rude and ignorant people who really shouldn't be here. I'm talking about people that view dA as "MySpace with ' porn '". In other words, people who don't know or don't care what the community is about. It would be nice if there was a way to reach them and ask them to leave or change their ways, but that's never going to happen.

But there's another issue that the frustrated artists may not be realizing when they pack up and leave forever. By pulling back the great work they had once contributed to the great collection that is dA, they, themselves are diminishing the quality and splendor of this place. To say that another way, if all the real artists here were to leave at the same time, this place actually would devolve into MySpace with porn.

The best way to improve the community is not to surrender to the ones that "just don't get it", but to make deviantART an undesirable place for them. We need to fight, carry on, and claim this place as our home.

Here's how to do it:
If people are making inappropriate remarks, block them. If you see people posting artwork that is inappropriate or stolen, report them. And as much as I hate to see watermarks, if you're having a problem with people taking your images, I'd rather have the chance to see a watered-down version of your work than nothing at all. If we turn a cold shoulder to them and deny them the ability to do the things that are bringing the place down, they will eventually tire of even being here.

(Note: This was modified from my latest journal, which was less of an editorial and more of a desperate plea.)

I have to say that I agree. And yet, I can also understand how some may feel the need to leave. Our presence on any website, in any sort of gallery, sends a message of who we are as an artist. And if that message may damage our ability to present ourselves positively to important contacts, then by all means, they ought to leave. It is also a matter of how much one derives from the social community of DA.

I, for one, cannot imagine leaving. DA is such an important part of my social and artistic life. But I do not think of it as a networking tool or as a way to advance my (non)career as an artist but as a way to share my art with online friends and acquaintances, old and new alike.

I guess that's why those links were created. Yes, we should indeed put them to good use. ;)

Three things I know: Let go of fear and regret, live your passions and live with passion.
*DAPoliticalForum:iconDAPoliticalForum: May 17, 2008, 7:18:39 PM Mood: Wow!
I have literally had to do the same thing with the Official DA Political Forum. The threads were so rude, foolish, and ignorant that I started a weekly column in our Club Journal called Quality of Posted Threads on Forum: Week IV on May 11, 2008 [link]

I make no bones about it that I am asking for their threads to be locked, and that I will post their Bad Thread in our Journal. The results were immediate, the deviant members rallied around the effort, and the posted threads became much better. I have had to request no locks on the threads this week.

You should change the title of the article so 'they' can actually see it, IF 'they' happen to see it.

I don't have a problem with these myspace porn people (that I know of) myself that you're referring to, really I couldn't care less. They be as common as the spam in your email or the traffic rolling down the street at any given time of day. At least, at.... least, they're somewhat responsive from your tale of woo.

I'd rather have 'responsive' myspace porn people. Send 'em my way they're part of the population and potential viewers. Anything is better...than nothing at all.
