#DigitalMedia Critique Weekend

=DMchat:iconDMchat: reports, September 30
=DMchat is organizing for the very first time a "Critique Weekend". #DigitalMedia has had a history of critique night chat events, which became very popular in a short time, leaving behind devastated critiquers, but very satisfied artists.

This time, however, we decided to go beyond the boundaries of the chatwalls. We'll extend this event on a bigger scale and give the critiquers as well as the artists a whole week to help eachother out.

Programmers: help asked !

*titiavanbeugen:icontitiavanbeugen: reports, May 20
For many years now I have a lot of fun with the freeware fractalprogram Fractal Explorer... and many people more.
Fractal Explorer has proven to be an excellent fractalprogram.
But there is a problem now...

Arthur, the creator of Fractal Explorer hasn't got the time anymore to update the program.
It has to be made compatible for Vista (and later). Some people can still use it, some can't, or there are problems.
I asked Arthur about updating it. He wrote:

"Probably it is impossible. Or may be very difficult...
FE was created with Delphi 3, which was released in 1997 or 1998 year...
It was not simple to get compatibility with Win 2000/XP because
Delphi 3 not have some declarations for this OS...
To get compatibility with Vista FE needs much never compiler. May be
Delphi 7 (at least), may by more never...

But moving from Delphi 3 to another version is very difficult, because
FE uses many additional components and controls. And some from it
has no compatible versions for never versions of Delphi.
So, it needed to rewrite at least 60-70% of UI code and design..."

I don't understand all this, but I understand I and many others soon can't play with this toy anymore.
Is there anyone around here that is able to update Fractal Explorer for the future?

I was writing a tutorial, but the motivation is gone now, because probably there is no FE anymore to play with :-(

Please contact me, and I will contact Arthur.

I can't possibly help.

I just want to say that I enjoy FE too.
I would be sorry to see it go.

I use it on Mac with a special conversion programme to run Windows. So perhaps I can keep it safe.
I've never had Vista. My "artificial" Windows XP is the last one before Vista.

I shall keep it and on the old laptop PC.
Isn't it all complicated and frustrating for people who are not technically competant?

This news saddens me a bit...

I've been wanting to try FE after seeing many wonderful results from you and a multitude of others. But my last computer with Windows XP has died, I have another with Vista, thirdly a Mac OS.

:sigh: Sorry for not saying anything particularly helpful...

Well....you still can try FE. There are Vista users that experience only minor problems. You never know how it is with computers. And IF it works, it is wonderful :-)

Basically, what he is saying is the program is too old to work on Winows XP or Mac OS X or higher. Fractal Explorer probablly can't be upgrated unless you have the program that created it (Delphi3). It probablly can't be upgrated by anyone but the creator, because, like he said, there is a lot of additional components. Since you have a Vista, you probablly won't encouter any major problems. But otherwise, I don't know what to tell you!

Definitely promising!

(I really must tack that onto the The Big To Do list: learn about FE... :D)

I still have XP, but I heard other people have (big) problems with Vista. So I asked the creator, and he couldn't give me much hope since he has barely time for his wife and daughter.

Well. . . then, you know, i'm not sure what to tell you. I'm a Macontosh and a Windows person only. Besides, I'm just a 15 year old girl. . . I don't have much experience with programs like that!
